pours golden brown with a large off white head. aroma is fruity apples mostly, and hoppy, with pine needles. flavor is hoppy, and of grapefruit with a strong alcohol flavor. this beer is strong though not sticky like many other barley wines. however I prefer the previous old guardians to this one. maybe aging will do this one well.

Bottle. 2006. Pours a light amber/orange color with a quick fading white head. Aroma is lightly fruity with a mixture of alcohol. There are notes of prunes, syrup, and light bready aromas. Flavor is very malty and sweet, alcohol is pretty well hidden here. Finish is lasting and smokey. There are notes of carmelized sugars, caramel, and a slight vineous flavor. slightly bittering. Mouthfeel is huge and chewey. This beer was to celebrate my first teaching job!! I would like to see this one smooth out in a few years.

This is an excellent beer. The color is brown with a nice head. The beer is very full. The taste is initially of nice malt similar to their IPAs. The finish is nice and hoppy. Overall excellent beer. Not overwhelming like some barley wines.

2013 vintage. Nearly a half inch of sediment on the bottom. Nose was surprisingly light for such a beefy beer. Color is an interesting cloudy copper. Taste is heavy with malt and hop, and plenty of alcohol. Quite sweet up front with a typically bitter Stone finish. Interesting mix for sure. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I really like barley wne, but one thing that can let me down with a beer is too much alcohol taste. IMO, it ruins the flavor. This is a good beer that could have been a great beer.

Holy hell, is this strong. 2005 that just came out, I’ll be buying more and storing it for a long time because one can tell how it would benefit from more aging. This year’s is 12.26% so beware the strength, after the first sip my stomach started burning. Sweet but exquisitely balanced with just the right amount of hops, and despite the intensity it still goes down well. Taste doesn’t linger in my mouth as long as some other barleywines, but this is still probably the best I’ve had.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2005 22oz, 2005 bottle. Smells heavily of butterscotch and hops. Sweet and malty start. Really thick, oily hop taste. Definitely needs time to age and blend flavor. Right now it’s a little harsh and not as complex as I imagine it will be eventually. Still, the balance of both intense sweet and biter taste makes it drinkable and worthwhile. Will try to age a bottle and rerate.

2010 vintage on draft at Stone Oceanside. Pours amber brown with small, quickly dissipating, off white head. Aromas of sweet caramel, toffee, a bit of doughiness, alcohol, pine, chlorophil, and a little bit of woodiness. Taste is rich salty caramel, toffee, bread, grassy, chlorophil, still a bit of woodiness but a bit more oxidation/ cardboard than in the aroma(not overwhelmingly so). Finish is a bright alcohol warmth followed by sweetness and further moves into a dull bitter acidity. Would love to do a vertical tasting of this beer.

2014 Old Guardian on draft. Pours dark amber with a big head that laces well along the glass. The aroma is sweet and the taste is almost a honey flavor. Smooth for such a high alcohol percentage. A great sipping Barleywine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma has a floral hoppiness that dominates. Mouthfeel is very oily and thick. Appearance is good. Too sweet for my tastes. Perhaps I am just not a barley wine fan.
