A beautiful bold barley wine. Massive malt and hop notes. Silver Medal winner at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival in the Barley Wine category. Gold Medal winner at the 2002 World Beer Championships in the Barley Wine Category. Look for it in the first quarter of each new year. Can be cellared or enjoyed upon its release.

2007 bottle - Noticeably sweet right off the bat. Probably needs more time to age and mellow out. Great color and aroma. Definitely not for the timid. One of the better barley wines available in high distribution.

Very hoppy nose with not much malt, which is pretty much what the rest of the beer is like. Pretty light in color for a barley wine but yet it is still sweet. I think age will help this beer.

A: Poured a deep reddish brown color with good carbonation with a great dirty white cap S: Caramel, light pine with a nice grapefruit presence T: A nice hop bitternes, with a blast of Cascade hops presenting a nice grapefruit presence and a hint at pine. Some caramel and booze mix with the hop profile leaving a nice impression of the style. Finishes a bit bitter but not like fresh Bigfoot bitter and a bit sticky M: Full bodied, well carbonated with loads of flavor O: Very nice. Should withstand the test of time as most OG’s do. Nice changeup by Stone.

22 oz. bomber poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy, amber-orange color with a foamy off-white head that dissipates quickly. Fair lacing. Aroma is a strong malty sweetness, some caramel, raisins, and alcohol. Flavor is initially a strong, sweet maltiness followed by a hop bitterness. Alcohol is quite noticeable. Hints of pepper. Full bodied. Long, bitter finish.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2013 Various vintages and ages. Pours a beautiful light rosewood color. Doughy, complex nose with tropical fruits and flowers. Quite bitter and unfortunately not in a good way. Bright on the palate with a caressing, long finish. Want the bottle-conditioned version back.

bottle 22oz: 2009 release: Poured a murky amber with a small head. Hops smells with grapefruti and pine. Tasted sweet and malty with extreme hop flavor and bitterness. Lasting bitterness...long lasting! Medium body. Overall really enjoyed and would not mind letting one of these age and try later.

Good stuff... First one I've had of the new recipe. Bottle, ~50deg F by the way. You can smell it as soon as the bottle is opened. A very fruity/citrucy/hoppy scent. Pours beautifully amber and clear, with a decent head for a BW. Taste is kick-your-butt right up front with sweet malts, a whole mess of hops, citrucy flavors, grapefruit alcohol and spicy! Definately a warm beer, the 10% packs a real kick on the way down. Very enjoyable to sip on for a looong time. Highly recommended. :)

Had 2004 edition of this at O’Brians in SD. Aroma wasn’t anything amazing, and it seemed pretty opaque for a 10% barleywine, but it has a solid flavor to it, all the barleywines I’ve had have been improperly balanced between flavor and the taste of the alcohol, this one seems to get the formula right and has a solid balance of flavor balanced by the alcohol taste. I would say it’s one of the better barleywines available.

Stunning redish clear pour. Aroma deep with hops and malt as well as some fruit. Taste was huge with malt and a nice bitterness. The subtle hints of breads and barley came about mid swallow and the brew finished bitter and slightly sweet. Good stuff from the boys down in Escondido.
