A beautiful bold barley wine. Massive malt and hop notes. Silver Medal winner at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival in the Barley Wine category. Gold Medal winner at the 2002 World Beer Championships in the Barley Wine Category. Look for it in the first quarter of each new year. Can be cellared or enjoyed upon its release.

Stunning redish clear pour. Aroma deep with hops and malt as well as some fruit. Taste was huge with malt and a nice bitterness. The subtle hints of breads and barley came about mid swallow and the brew finished bitter and slightly sweet. Good stuff from the boys down in Escondido.

Hazy orange hues with a little white head. Not a very overwhelming hoppy aroma, but instead, heavy malty scents. Good malt flavor with out the sickly sweetness. Light body and balanced carbonation. A lingering soft sour finish. Good barleywine

Courtesy of hobbersr. Damn this has a hoppy aroma! Havenít even tasted it yet and I can smell how thick it is. The taste is even bigger than the smell, with burnt toast and burnt marshmellow with the usual barley wine fruits. Very good.

deep reddish pour, small amount of off white head, little carbonation...super malty, very sweet, boozy, not much bitterness from hops

Early edition 2008. Pour is golden amber and has a thick white head. Not alot of aroma, but hoppy citrus is detectable. Tastes is good, with a a crisp citrus hops finish and smooth mouthfeel.

Dark orange pour with a very small off white head , sweet aroma and taste. The only other barley wine Iíve had was Dieu Du Ciel Solstice díHiver which doesnít exactly taste the same but I think I like this one slightly more.

Bottle 2012: This isone the most beautiful looking pours Iíve seen. smelled great, tasted a little ííhoppyíí for me, yet balanced. I just prefer a sweeter barley wine, and this is one of the best. Let the malt shine through more and they have a knockout for me. Still, a very nice barley wine and hard to find one that isnt all hopped up these day, this one less than most. Will enjoy this again.

Copper pour with a moderate frothy white head. Grass, citrus fruit, caramel and sugar aroma. Taste of dark fruits, citrus and floral hops, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol. This brew is well balanced with a syrupy mouthfeel.

2005 bottle. Deep amber, almost ruby color, thin white head, left good lacing on my glass. Aroma is incredibly complex, fruits, alcohol, malt, some gentle spices in there, my nose was glued to the rim of my glass. Flavor is bold, malt, hops, a very noticable alcohol bite, finish has a lot of oak and smoky flavors in it. A little too aggressive in my opinion, a little harsh, it didnít have the sturdy palate to back it up (like say the Speedway, which I lauded for itís bold flavor, but since these are different styles itís apples and oranges). Mouthfeel is smooth, the alcohol really stands out along with the oak after each sip. Wish I could have tried the older vintages, but then again this beer was still quite a treat. A small step below the Old Numbskull and the Old Horizontal (two of the finest beers Iíve ever had, so thatís legit company to be in). Hoping that after aging a bit the flavor will be a little more rounded and less overwhelming, Iíll check back in 6 months or so. Also, drinking an entire bomber by yourself will get you feeling great, I can sense my writing ability decline with the level of the beer in the bottle.
