A beautiful bold barley wine. Massive malt and hop notes. Silver Medal winner at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival in the Barley Wine category. 2013 bottle, looks gorgeous. Good head retention and carbonation. Aromas consist of cherries, plum, and licorice. Will definitely improve with aging.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2008 08...22oz bottle. pours a golden hue with a floral, citrus aroma. Piney, hoppy, fruity citrus flavor and feels almost sticky on the palate. Despite the alcohol content, it was very well hidden in this multi-dimensional brew. Definitely one of my favorites!

Vintage 2011 poured November 2013. Poured cloudy orange brown with a thin frothy head that dissipated after the first sip. Very very faint alcohol bite considering the ABV. Very malty but not terribly strong tasting like most barley wines I’ve had.

2006 vintage in 22oz bottle. brassy color with minimal whitish head. aroma gives samples of banana, caramel/toffee, nuts and hops. suprisingly syrupy and pushing towards sweet. hop bitterness is present, but not as strong as i’d have first expected... esp. in a beer from Stone. the 11.26% abv is well hidden in this beer w/ the exception of the syrupiness. yet another first rate brew from Stone.

Dark bronze w/ amber color. Thin head. Smells of Big bready malts. Maybe some dark fruit. Noticeable hops. Malt tastes like bread, some caramel, some raisins. Big hop kick for a barley wine - it kind of overpowers any sweetness coming through on the malts. Tart, bitter, a little piney. Some alcohol is also coming through. Fuller body. Pretty dry.

22oz bottle, 2006 edition. Poured crystal clear deep copper into a tulip with a moderately lasting 1-finger beige foamy head. Body is mostly still. Looks absolutely beautiful. Fantastic nose with alcohol and dark fruits (mostly raisin & prune), big sweet malts. First taste is kick-in-the-face hops and alcohol. Hop character is somewhat indistinct, very bitter. The bitterness seems well controlled at first but becomes less so as I keep drinking. Malt is strongly present but very mellow, a little bit sweet. The finish starts out with brief sweetness and then becomes quite bitter lasting quite a while. The body is massive, befitting a barleywine, not quite syrupy, great mouthfeel on the whole with a little nose-tingling alcohol sensation as well. I’m impressed, but this could use some time in the cellar to sort out the hop profile.

A new favorite in the Barley Wine category. Pours clear amber with small cream colored head which fades quickly leaving little to no lacing. Excellent combination of sweet malt with hoppy bitterness; hides the alcohol very well.

22oz bottle, Limited Early 2008 Release Pours like motor oil, pleasing, sweet aroma that i rich and complex hops. Minimal head. A little spice, some alcohol kick and a slight hoppy finish. Excellent and that’s without cellering... I need to put one away for next year.

Just drank the bottle and assumed I had already written a review. Guess not so I’ll have to do a "review light" until I drink again. Aroma: wonderful, full hops. Appearance: slightly cloudy dark golden, off amber. Flavor: Simply wonderful. I would put this close to Behemoth and my dark horse candidate, Big Foot. Palate: nice balance. Overall: Love it will but it again.
