Ruby coloured, with a nice head and some lacing. Dark fruit, spice, brown sugar, and some alcohol on the nose, along with floral and fruity hops. The hops mixed with the malt body gave it a really juicy aroma. Tasted of toffee, spice, dark fruity, fruity and floral hops, and a bit of alcohol. Nice bitter finish. Creamy, sticky body with nice alcohol warming. Great example of an American barley wine.

DATE TASTED: May 20, 2015... GLASSWARE: Duvel snifter... OCCASION: Cavs begin the Eastern Conference Finals in Atlanta--as good a time as any for the Old Guardian! APPEARANCE: Dark ruby body that is almost opaque; sports a fortified, thick, creamy off-white head that laces in equally thick webbing... AROMA: a blast of hops--Cascade, centennial, and Amarillo, by estimate--elicits a welcome interest; some earthy, damp tree-like tones; malts are dark and intense... PALATE: gloriously and uncompromisingly full-bodied; thick and creamy, with a long-lasting finish that warms the throat--a pleasantly irrepressible presence...TASTE: A potpourri of hops crunch in the teeth--citrus, mango, apple, berry, licorice, liquor, and cinnamon; the malts are the size of a horse blanket and approximate the taste--a raw, full tete-a-tete between hop and malt; slight medicinal undertones... OVERALL: as I remember it--a force of nature, repressed alcohol nonetheless driving a bold, balanced barley wine that smashes the senses--am I speaking in too much hyperbole?--and strikes a vinous similarity with a lighter red; a champion of the genre...supersedes the Bigfoot....

A barleywine that is not overdone in prunes and sugar. Very drinkable, well masked. Dark brown, typical carbonation. Seemed to have typical west coast hops, but bitterness was muted.

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2015 2015 bottle. Pours hazy copper with a thick creamy ivory head. Beautiful cling. Aromas of caramel, candy apple, dark fruit and earthy tones. Flavors are caramel, toffee, chocolate, plum, toasty grains, deep earthy tones. Substantial booziness. Peppery on the palate, but otherwise a clean finish for such a huge beer. Beautiful barley wine. This is one of the best I’ve ever had.

2014 Bottle. Pours a vibrant copper color with a small white head. Smells and tastes of maple, molasses and caramel. The high ABV definitely makes itself known with a warming finish. Bitter and astringent. Overall a pretty good beer but it needs to be tamed a bit; I’m sure aging it a few years would help a lot.

Smaksprøve fra Rune. Sherryfarget. Veldig lavt boblet skum. Uklar. Forsiktig fruktaroma. Smaken plommer. Oljeaktig munnfølelse. Alkoholen kommer vel tydelig fram.

Poured from 22oz bottle at home. Sweet molassess, sugar, syrupy aroma. Color is dark orange, a thin ring of white head. Sugary, maple, grassy, and pretty boozy taste. Still not a huge fan of barley wine, but this was definitely drinkable.

On tap at BrewDog Liverpool. Deep reddish brown beer, with tiny tan head. Aroma has raisins, spicy and sweet toffee. Taste a moderately sweet, with medium body.
