3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma: very powerful, fruity, grape-like. Fresh, majestic hops, heavy malt, figs, prunes, cinnamon, caramelized sugar. The sweet, deep malty profile is very balanced up the fresh hops, reeking of lemon, grape and leaves. Very, very nice indeed.
Flavour: huge! Sweetness hits you, and a sledgehammer of bitterness, not half a second later. I can taste wild raspberries, banana, licorice-like malt, great juicy hops. Very big-bodied, slightly acrid and noble. The aftertaste is very sweet, but again it is balanced up by the good amount of hops. Pears and cognac can also be sensed in the aftertaste. To be quite honest, the sweetness makes it almost too big. I think I would prefered it a tad bit drier.
Appearance: slightly dim apricot with the style-typical yellowish head. The head diminshes rahter quickly, leaving a thin foam-film that tells of the sweetness and cloys to the glass.
Palate: oily, fluffy, big. Madeira-like. Very nice sparkling quality. Runs off the tongue like oily, sweet satin.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours clear amber with a creamy to frothy lasting beige head that leaves great lacing. Aroma is sour, banana, malt and pine. Flavors of caramel and grapefruit. Surprisingly light body for such a rich taste, oily feel, average carbonation, medium to heavy sweetness, light to medium bitter taste and a sticky sweet and lightly bitter finish. Hides the alcohol very well.

The aroma oozes out of the glass and into your cerebral cortex. Leather, tobacco, aggressive hops and a sharp sting. The taste is incredible from moist wood, wet raisins, burnt sugar, overripe fruit. There is a underlying sweetness that desperately tries to break through, but is supressed by the sharp and brutal hops. There is a slight "umami" sensation going on here. I love this barley wine!

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This is perhaps my favorite barleywine. Every year a characteristic balanced malt hoppiness screams out of the glass. The body and carbonation just perfect. A balanced bittersweet finish leaving you ready for more. It has a citrus pine hoppiness to a biscuit toffe maltiness that doesn’t lean to far toward fruitiness. American all the way.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: OCT 27, 2014 Bottle: 2010, a little over 4 years old. Dense, opaque rusty copper that edges on brown. Small, bubbly beige head settles to a skimpy collar & ring in moments. Aroma of light caramel, earthiness, sticky toffee, light metallic notes, red grapes, a hint of booze, & the start of what might be oxidation, but it’s not overpowering (yet, anyway). Flavor is a bit spicier, both with a little more earthy & leafy hope notes, almost ashy, along with a stronger, boozy backbone. Alcohol, lightly vinous notes, prunes covered in sticky caramel & toffee, moderate toastiness throughout. Residual sugar coated apples in the finish with a slight resounding note of minor oxidation & booze. Hefty body.

Where have I been? This has been a standard for me for a long time and to date I’ve failed to rate it. In a word - great! I love this BW. I am enjoying a 2014 edition right now. I should put it away for 6-12 months, but who can wait? Citrusy sweet nose, sweet bitter initial bite, coating mouthfeel with a lingering hoppy maltiness. fine lacing remains 1 min after pour from a 22. Mmm Mmm good. I could only hope my home brewed version comes within a mile or two of this.
