Refreshingly smooth and drinkable for the style but not as complex and spicy as I’d hoped.

14th July 2008. Hazy dark amber beer. Low carbonation. Unusual barleywine. Starts like a cheap super strong lager - malty but also bready with a pinch of caraway. There is a brief pineapple sweet note in the middle before giving way to a spirity finish. However the spirity finish is not the usual brandy/porty tones that are often found but has more of vodka/gin feel to the bitterish finish. Unusual but very drinkable.

Bomber. Orange with some white head. Aroma is boozy...very boozy and berries and other fruits. Flavor is similar with some lighter caramels. Sweet as expected but comes back strong at the very end, going into the finish with huge hops. A better barley wine than most.

’09 bomber. Pours golden amber with very thin ivory head. Mellow nose of vanilla, alcohol, and malt. Thin body. Alcohol is present in the middle. Taste of floral, malt, spice, honey and butterscotch. Hoppy warm finish. Meh.

Hazy pale red-orange. Little head...some lacing. Slight hoppy/sweet aroma (perhaps it’ll improve as it warms). Pleasantly strong bitter and malty flavor. Some lingering bitterness. Overall, very good.

2010 Limited Release...An amber-orange pour with a small disappearing head. The aroma is of alcohol and tangerine. The flavor has strong notes of peach and the alcohol presence is strong. Finishes very dry and bitter. Barley wines are not my favorite but this one is enjoyable because Stone (as always) does it right.

Peachy brown. Strong nose, sweet and quite hoppy, a bit of pine. Flavor is strong and hoppy, some woodiness. Richness is akin to maple syrup, maybe a bit of dry fruit like apricots in the background. Alcohol is a bit strong and overnoticeable. Tastes like it's trying to be Bigfoot's older brother, but doesn't have the malt heft to back up its strength. Certainly good, but still one of the least impressive things I've had from Stone (which, to be fair, is usually spectacular).

Gentle alcohol in the aroma. Pine, earthy, sweaty, spicy, citrus hops in the aroma with an underlying malt sweetness. Clear orange colouation with off-white head that recedes to thin cover and a nice ring around the glass. Assertively hoppy. Very alcoholic. Strongly malty with a very bitter finish. Medium body. Good carbonation. Lively mouthfeel. Flavours don’t play well together. Will probably be much more integrated in a year or two. Needs to grow up. Bottle (enjoyed with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT and Rastacouere). Thanks for this trade from eyedrinkale.
