3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
One of my bottles at RBSG. Not much interest. Could have been aged a little longer. Slightly haze amber pour with a short off white head. Lots of hop but shorter than I would have expected. Tastes more like a IIPA than a barleywine. Some cottoncandy, grapefruit. Pepper and heartburn. Hot. Decent but perhaps fruit and sweetness could have been developed more in time. Look forward to the next sample.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours medium amber, somewhat hazy. Medium foamy head, aroma of malts hops with resins, caramels, wet forrest in the end. Flavour is strong in the area of malted hops, resins and caramel. I’m afarid to say, it doesn’t seem as refined as I wold expect from a Stone ale product. The beer is drinkable, but far from remarkable (as I was expecting). Perhaps some cellaring would be in order, however fresh outa the barrel it really needs a little more.

I love the guys at Stone, but this one goes the same way most Barleywines go for me... they look and smell better than they taste. Great copper color and malty notes with just a touch of hops. But this one was overdone - especially on the hop smack. Can you say balance in a beer? Greg missed it on this one. There are many other better styles, especially from Stone.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2012 This was my first barleywine and will most likely be my last. The flavor just didn’t sit well with me, as there was a huge aftertaste of alcohol. It’s almost like mixing an ale with a shot of vodka.

Very hoppy nose with not much malt, which is pretty much what the rest of the beer is like. Pretty light in color for a barley wine but yet it is still sweet. I think age will help this beer.

great robust flavor, nice brown sugar nose. i love the tint of rose color it has.
don’t know if it will hold up too long in your cellar. I think it is best after 3 or 4 months in the bottle.great cold sunday barlywine, sit back and enjoy the complex spices that will keep you guessing. When you see one of these, GRAB the case. They are hard to come bye and well worth the hunt.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22 oz 2006 bottle. Pours a glowing reddish orange with a medium off white head that goes to a thin film.
The aroma is sweet and spicy candy-like caramel with some hoppiness and a bit of watery DMS. It’s kind of metallic and phenolic as well.
The flavor is spicy caramel and a strong watery alcohol with a sharp and spicy bitter alcoholic finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with light carbonation.
Overall, not so great. It’s too alcoholic and not very complex. I wonder if this bottle might be a little bad (especially from the smell). I’ve had it once before and remember not being impressed though.
