A beautiful bold barley wine. Massive malt and hop notes. Silver Medal winner at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival in the Barley Wine category. Gold Medal winner at the 2002 World Beer Championships in the Barley Wine Category. Look for it in the first quarter of each new year. Can be cellared or enjoyed upon its release.

Its hard to dis' a nice beer because it clearly misses its style. So I didn't. The beer is good, hoppy with decent malt body, good aroma and fairly complex with tobacco and citrus notes. However, it anin't a barleywine per se. I also don't want to fall into the trap of calling it a "disguised" IPA which is IMHO a bullshit way of lumping a beer into a category based upon one inability to critically differentiate between a beer and proper style. However, the beer is missing the residual sweetness from the typical crystal, Special B (or whatever its replacement is called) biscuit and other malts which typically lend a BW its charater and complexity. With thta said, I still enjoed this beer.

frothy head with dark gold/orange transluscent ale. hoppy aroma is present with a nice malty element as well. bitterness is forward which surprised me. i haven’t had an aged barley wine, but can only assume this would mellow with time. alcohol is well hidden until i stand up. i liked it, but expected a little more.

2005 Bottle thanks to JohnC. Pale orange brew with a stinging alcoholic nose. Hops and alcohol are pretty much all this has going for it. Hopefully a few years will mellow it.

VINTAGE 2004.

Golden, reddish. Moderate head. Raisins and honey notes. Very sweet malty finish. Alcohol is totally absent. Quite special, but not paticulary well balanced.

22 oz Bomber: Early 07 Release: Pours Dark Amber with a big off white head. Aroma of fruit and booze. Taste is that of fruit and alcohol. Pretty complex but most masked by bitterness. Decent, not what I expected from a barleywine.

22 oz. bottle - pours dark amber with slight haze and a little head just around the edges; malty aromas w/ sweet hops and some stale fruit; flavors come off stale as well with some spice and fruit mixed with the big hops; texture is thin with some alcohol burn; IMO, not a very drinkable BW at this point; not exactly harsh or anything like that, just not my type of BW as it was missing the sugary flavors that i love; i love stone, so was sort of disappointed with this one

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2008 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep copper with a light head. Aroma is deep with hops and alcohol. Flavor is wow. Strong hops punch. Taste doesnt really develop as it goes as I’d expect, but the hops linger. Light malt and citrus hints though. Overall, very powerful, pretty good. Very hoppy.
