2007 edition on tap at Duckworth’s in Charlotte. Aroma is redolent with butterscotch. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a slight amber head. Starts sweet but immediately hits yo with a hammer of bittering hops. Hoppy throughout but with butterscotch sweetness, Old Guardian has a soft slick mouthfeel.

2010 bottle. Pours cloudy amber with a small head. Looks very nice in the goblet. Aroma is quite complex with raisins and earthy smells predominant but a nice fruity strain underneath, I think mostly apples. Flavor is well-balanced between the bitter citrus hop flavors and the huge bready, raisiny malt hit, but the alcohol just comes on way too strong. Before I can get a good taste of what’s going on in my mouth the burn just drowns everything out. Not my favorite barleywine.

Pours hazy orange-amber with an ivory-colored head. Aroma was sweet-reminiscent of melted caramel. Palate was slightly thick and syrupy. Sweet caramelly flavor with a very slight burnt note in the finish (not unpleasant though). You’ll definitely feel the alcohol, but it’s well-masked.

(bottle) Pours a clear dark amber color with a medium sized light tan head and moderate lacing. Aroma is full of dark fruits, with plenty of plum and raisin accompanied by an adequate dose of strawberry jam. There’s also some toasted malt and caramel appearing as well. Light scents of piney hops escape from the weight of the dark fruit overtone, and alcohol is present. Aroma continues to improve with warming. Flavor takes a sharp turn towards unpleasant however, and begins with a sticky sweetness that is mostly indeterminable (taste some of the strawberry jam and caramel) before switching over to an obnoxiously bitter finish that’s coupled with singeing alcohol. The flavor actually follows suit with the aroma and begins to improve with warming as well. Once my tongue was accustomed to the bitterness, the sweet-bitter transition became less jarring and the bitterness rounded to expose some flavors of grapefruit and candied orange. Overall this is not bad as is, but some aging should do this beer wonders.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2015 Somewhat typical barley wine, although significantly skewed toward the hoppy side, which is good because it mostly avoids the common over sweet, over malty, overly simplistic approach of many barley wines. However, it still lacks complexity, depth, and interesting notes that would make me want to buy it again. Overall, slightly better than average. UPDATE: sample at 3 years old, way improved with more complexity. Enjoyed a lot.

2007 vintage. Draft at Brouwer’s Cafe. Inviting buttery, fruity aroma. Hazy dark amber-orange w/ fine smooth lacing. Initial is balanced. Final is light w/ lingering bitterness, but then fades to nothing. Medium body. Good enough but just a little flat. After several sips, it really isn’t so interesting. Maybe a bit past its prime.

Numerous bottles over the years, some fresh some aged. I used to be into this when it was more fresh and hoppy (used to like DFH Olde School a lot too) but now I think I prefer the more aged and sweeter version but not really a fan of American barleywine much at all these days. Sweet and boozy, sharper, piney hops, more booze and light aspirin.
