3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus as well as butter and caramel malt. The appearance is deep amber with a large head. The flavor is like the aroma with a very bitter finish. The palate is thick and smooth. Overall a very well made beer that is just too bitter.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: JAN 28, 2012 On draft at Abraxas. Probably the early 09 vintage. Clearish red orange pour with no real head. Piney hop resin flavor is well balanced. Some citrus notes. I guess this thing must need a bit more time to really bring out the ’barleywine’ flavors i’ve come to expect. Rerate: more hoppy than i remembered. Big american version of the style.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
2008 Bottle. Orange colour with an off-white head. Malty, sweet, alcohol, caramel, almonds, fruits, grapefruity hops, bitter finish. A bit too much alcohol and bitterness for me. Probably better with age.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Small off-white, quickly diminishing head. Medium amber body. Hoppy aroma of resin and grapefruit. Hint of cookie. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and heavily bitter with a lingering taste of alcohol. Full body with a velvety texture and soft carbonation. Seems way over the top with hops for a barley wine. Why not just drink a super-hopped IPA? Style aside, a good-tasting beer.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled both 08 and 09 bottles. The 09 was much more crisp and forefront in the hops, a warm resinous pine and earthy hops, chased with alcohol warmth. Hint of sweet fruit, caramel, raisin, just sweet enough.
The 08 lost a lot of the crisp resin of the hops, leaving an earthy warmth with stronger hints of brandied fruit and raisins, caramel malts and a roasty quality.
Sampled at Rozi’s Wine & Liquor, Stone Tasting Event, Lakewood, OH.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Big Strong Bold Assertive. All words that could be adequately used to describe this sum business from Stone. Smells of alcoholic vanilla mint mouthwash and ripe bananas. Flavor is a burning alcoholic rush with bitter piney hops and a softer toffee malt sweetness on the side of the tongue that salvages this beast from being in the cellar on flavor. Palate is substantial throughout temp range with a sugary fullness that leaves the lips smack-a-lackin. I don’t know why, but I like this bruiser. The bottle is best shared in my opinion due to the severe alcohol punchiness. Thanks Stone. 2009 22 oz.

Very strong and liquor like. Not very balanced. It assaults your senses too much to enjoy. I used the rest of my bottle to cook with.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 21, 2009 22oz 2009 bottle. Pours copper with a nice white head. Smells of hay, some citrus, and hops. Tastes of brown sugar, floral hops, and some dryness on the finish. I expect more complexity from a barley wine like this. The hops just dominate both the flavor and aroma. I would have no idea this was a 11+% or a barley wine if I tasted this blind.

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: DEC 16, 2012 Sweet, syrupy ,butterscotch-like aroma. One of the best I’ve smelled in a beer. Tastes of hops, orange peel, and maybe some vanilla. A little too much hop on the backend for me. Great mouthfeel. Can hardly taste the alcohol through all of the hops.
Update in 2012: Found the 2012 to be much different than my original rating, the hoppiness I sensed in ’09 was swallowed up by too sweet malt.
