3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz Bomber: Early 07 Release: Pours Dark Amber with a big off white head. Aroma of fruit and booze. Taste is that of fruit and alcohol. Pretty complex but most masked by bitterness. Decent, not what I expected from a barleywine.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle - pours dark amber with slight haze and a little head just around the edges; malty aromas w/ sweet hops and some stale fruit; flavors come off stale as well with some spice and fruit mixed with the big hops; texture is thin with some alcohol burn; IMO, not a very drinkable BW at this point; not exactly harsh or anything like that, just not my type of BW as it was missing the sugary flavors that i love; i love stone, so was sort of disappointed with this one

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma is sweet fruity hops but was not very strong. This beer pours a very nice golden amber color with nice medium head that dissipates to small thin head relatively quickly. Flavor took some getting use to. Small amounts of citrus are present but the taste is mostly of spices and hops. Somehow the combination seemed bland mid drink. Alcohol is present throughout. Finish is bitter. Overall the beer reminds me more of an IPA.

Pours adeep copper to amber color has an unfiltered appearance thick tan head strong alcohol burn sweet malt flavor good hop bitterness not as much aroma as BIgfoot still nice fruity malty aromas and flavors a little light on the bite chocolate flavors emerge upon warming, good solid malt lacks depth in the hops but still a good barley wine.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle 2008 - Pours dark brown with a mostly maintained tan head. Aroma of mango and citric hops, pine resins, and caramelized malt. Taste is sweet and hoppy with notes of caramelized wort, toffee, plums, and dark fruit. Mouthfeel is full bodied and resinous with soft carbonation. A good beer, but needs to be laid down for a few years.

UPDATED: JUL 14, 2010 Re-rate 7/12/10: Bottle sample at a tasting. 2009 vintage. Thanks David Cohen. Hazy dark orange. Aroma of big resinous hops with some pine, flowers and citrus hints. Bitter hoppy flavor with pine, some resin and grapefruit notes with a bit of honey-ish malt in the back. Medium-full body. Very bitter and not too balanced but still tasty. 6/4/7/4/13=3.4
(11/3/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Escondido. 2007 vintage. Hazy orange color. Aroma full of malt, caramel, honey, sherry, some fruitiness and some alcohol. Sweet malty flavor with some wood, vanilla notes, caramel, honey, sherry notes, some fruitiness and some bitter hoppiness in the finish. Full-bodied. Not my cup of tea. 6/3/6/4/12=3.1

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus as well as butter and caramel malt. The appearance is deep amber with a large head. The flavor is like the aroma with a very bitter finish. The palate is thick and smooth. Overall a very well made beer that is just too bitter.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: JAN 28, 2012 On draft at Abraxas. Probably the early 09 vintage. Clearish red orange pour with no real head. Piney hop resin flavor is well balanced. Some citrus notes. I guess this thing must need a bit more time to really bring out the ’barleywine’ flavors i’ve come to expect. Rerate: more hoppy than i remembered. Big american version of the style.
