Q: ďWhat do you call it when you take a sip of oak barrel aged Double Bastard Ale thatís had the other half of the bounty of chili peppers from Gregís home garden ceremoniously added in, resulting in a punishingly intense level of hot pepper heat to an already overly intense beer whose elevated alcohol level caused a significant transference of pain-inducing capsicum?Ē A: ďPunishment.Ē
Punishment is 2013 Double Bastard Ale brewed with freshly harvested peppers and aged in bourbon barrels. Brutally hot and unyielding in its imposition, this intensely hellish spawn of Caribbean red hots, fatalis and Moruga scorpion peppers is a just dessert for any spice-taunting masochist who dares to engage it.

This was a very bad beer. Too hot to enjoy, just really shitty. I donít know how anyone would drink this and think it should be bottled and sold.

Hazy brown-red pour with nice off-white head. Aroma and flavor are basically tons and tons of peppers. This is just an incredibly spicy beer. And so for flavor aroma and palate Iíd rate this pretty well. But overall itís fairly one dimensional due to pepper overload.

Mild pepper nose. Hazy dark copper, thin head. Sweet and malty with insanely hot peppers. Itís so hot, I feel the burn in my ears for some reason. I actually like this a little better than Stone Crime. The sweeter malt, while doing nothing for the intensity of the heat, goes very well with the smoky flavor of the peppers. I like hot peppers.

This worst beer ever created. Not only undrinkable, Stone had the audacity to charged me 16 for this garbage. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ The WWGT2D? Tasting. The pourís reddish amber with no head. The nose is similar to Crime. No subtlety wahtsoever. Just a load of chili and little else. The taste is intense. Building malevolent heat. Strong roasted pepper. Just a hint of sweet toffee malts break through. Oily, moderate carbonation. Oh man, I need to take a few minutes off from drinking.

C&C 750 mL bottle shared by maniac at the WWGT2D? Charlottesville tasting, 4/5/14. Pours a clear copper color with a medium creamy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of intense hot peppers with some caramel. The taste is intense hot peppers, a bit of caramel. Thin-medium bodied, palate-destroying heat.

Clear. Dark copper. Intense vegetal aroma. Can't believe how spicy this beer is! 3-4 ounces is all I could drink.

Basically, see previous review for Stone Crime. This one was actually a little lighter, more dry and a little less flavorful pepper-wise. The heat wasnt as overt at first, but slowly built up and climaxed in a much hotter, more intense burn. Definitely the hottest chili beer Iíve had to date (and Iíve had a lot of em). I loved it. I would come close to spending $20 for this, for the experience, when I was in the mood. I absolutely love chili beers, though. I donít really see a whole lot of difference from this and Over-the-top, 200 IBU IPAs. Granted, those dont actually cause pain in your mouth. Aside from that, the base Bourbon Double Bastard was pretty well-suited for the beer, I thought, providing as good a "balance" to the peppers as anything is going to. Again, for me personally, this is in the mid to high 4ís, but I guess Iíll just hedge the fact that you canít taste too much of the beer, and since we are rating beers here, give it a mid 3 score.
