COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Q: “What do you call it when you take a sip of oak barrel aged Double Bastard Ale that’s had the other half of the bounty of chili peppers from Greg’s home garden ceremoniously added in, resulting in a punishingly intense level of hot pepper heat to an already overly intense beer whose elevated alcohol level caused a significant transference of pain-inducing capsicum?” A: “Punishment.”

Tap at NOTB. Poured a hazy chestnut with a soapy head. Smell is booze and jalapeno or chili spice. Taste is HOT! Lots of spice with some booze and sweet malts that actually made a nice attempt of balancing it out. But still had a tough time with my little taster...

Smells hot, brewed with habeneros and ghost chilies. Tastes sweet, hoppy, and has a definite chili flavor Mouthfeel is smooth, medium bodied, with a very spicy kick in the back of the throat Looks dark, golden brown ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle. touch one to drink a lot of unless you love mind blowing pepper heat. Chili peppers dominate everything in this reddish copper beer. a touch of lingering sweet maltiness make a feeble attempt to counterattack heat; to no avail. great to try though

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Brown and clear with carbonation sticking to the glass. I smell lots of malt on top of the peppers. Mit is soy and a bit chocolatey. Then the pepper takes over.

On tap at EBF. I was pretty jazzed to try this one, most of everything I’ve had from Stone has been pretty solid. The aroma of hops were definitely present, slightly floral mixed with the chili pepper kick. A pretty good solid beer.

On tap at the Stone World Bistro & Gardens. Dark copper, aroma of pepper heat. Mouthfeel consistent with double bastard, but the peppers make themselves known immediately, from start to finish. Also a strong chili like heat aftertaste. An intriguing beer, not one I’d drink again.

On tap at stone winterstorm.copper reddish pour no head. Aroma is just mild chili peppers. Taste id more balanced than crime and not as hot but the chili taste lingers longer.

notb draft pour has a big nose of spicy peppers, some dry hops underneath, and some oak. mouth feel is medium and there is little carbonation. flavor has biting peppers, light dry hops, oak, and some alcohol heat as well. wow this is over the top with the peppers and is something I can only have a sip or two of.

On tap at Oakquinox. Pours with a syrupy, hazed red body with no head. Less peppers in the aroma than Crime. Aromas of caramel, pepper, alcohol and vegital. Flavors are peppery, smokey, burn and alcohol. Very harsh. Syrupy mouthfeel with light bubbles. A decent pepper beer, but I don’t see myself rushing out to try this again.

Common rating for Stone Punishment and Stone Crime
In short: Beers dominated by excessive presence of hot jalapenos peppers. I hated them.
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2011, Night Of The Barrels.
The look: Cloudy golden brown body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long (common to both): Nose is annoyingly spicy (Mexican hot spices), so much so that I couldn’t really smell anything else. Taste is jalapenos peppers that burn the palate over some caramel. Medium carbonation and oily texture.
Stone Punishment: As if the peppers were not burning my palate enough, there was an alcohol that was just the drop that spilled the glass. 2-3-2-2-4 = 1.3
Stone Crime: Less boozy and some of the juicy hops resin of the base beer (Lukcy Basartd) was there to alleviate the suffering. 3-3-3-2-6 = 1.7
Conclusion: By using the same hot peppers on two of their beers Stone wanted to kill two birds with one stone, but instead they killed two Stones with one spice.
