COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Q: ďWhat do you call it when you take a sip of oak barrel aged Double Bastard Ale thatís had the other half of the bounty of chili peppers from Gregís home garden ceremoniously added in, resulting in a punishingly intense level of hot pepper heat to an already overly intense beer whose elevated alcohol level caused a significant transference of pain-inducing capsicum?Ē A: ďPunishment.Ē
Punishment is 2013 Double Bastard Ale brewed with freshly harvested peppers and aged in bourbon barrels. Brutally hot and unyielding in its imposition, this intensely hellish spawn of Caribbean red hots, fatalis and Moruga scorpion peppers is a just dessert for any spice-taunting masochist who dares to engage it.

Bottle courtesy of maniac, alongside Crime provided by obguthr in an impressive display of beer tasting coordination. Aroma is eye-watering peppers. Taste is way too hot for me, and I ate kimchi in Korea.

A: The beer pours an ominous murky amber color with a barely-there ring of tan foam. S: You can smell the peppers before the glass even gets near your face. The heat is quite intense and the pepper smell is very, very green and fresh. I canít really even smell anything else, actually. T: It starts off hot with a lot of chile flavor. Thereís a bit of chocolate and oak that come through, but before you can enjoy them, the intense heat comes back and sits on your tongue for quite some time. M: The body is medium and the carbonation is on the low end of medium. And the heat burns the back of your throat a bit. D: This was pretty tough to drink. I would say even if youíre a big chile beer fan this would be painful.

750 c&c from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours murky dark copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma is mostly chili. Full bodied or better. Flavor: A real hot chili hit. Yeah, some dark malt too. But itís really hot. I can see why Greg donated the chilies. More than he personally needed! And that is all she wrote. Iím not gonna get much else other than a bare hint of bourbon. Whoosh! I think Iíll survive.

Bottle. Poured hazy orange copper color with an average frothy tan head that lasted with good to excellent lacing. Aroma was a heavy roasted peppers, strong dark alcohol aroma. Medium to abundant body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Heavy complex toasted roasted peppers and dark smooth flavor and a heavy complex dark finish of long duration. This is a complex standout beer.

A hazed brown ale with no head. In aroma, lots of pepper and not much else. In mouth, holy s@&t!!! Quick sweet malt followed by unforgiving hot pepper, burning the mouth and lingering for over 5 minutes. On tap at End of Everything beer fest Dec 22 2013.

C&C 750 mL bottle shared by maniac at the WWGT2D? Charlottesville tasting, 4/5/14. Pours a clear copper color with a medium creamy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of intense hot peppers with some caramel. The taste is intense hot peppers, a bit of caramel. Thin-medium bodied, palate-destroying heat.

Tap at Strong Ale Fest. Pours a full haze, murky amber. Okay foam. Nose is holy Bob Saget hot sauce container. Taste is the same, downing raw habanero hot sauce bottle. Not even a spicy beer, literally hot sauce. Impossible to enjoy.

Sample at Kurtkeller 018: Tequila-aged and Letís Agree to Ruin Our Evening with Pepper beers-tastic 01 on 11/04/2014. Murky copper color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Habanero peppers and malt in the nose. Full-bodied with a strong hot pepper character that dominates the malt and oak behind it. The finish is peppery with a lingering chili burn. I couldnít get on board with either of these beers, as with Crime this is too over the top.

12.7 oz cc from Caponeís. Pours turbid ruddy clay colored with off-white head. Nose is big hot pepper, malt, oak, caramel. Tastes very rich, with a gigantic hot pepper flavor and heat. Damn, if I knew Iíd have saved some of this to make 5-alarm chili with. It is without a doubt the spiciest beer I have ever had. Jesus is this one spicy. Iím a hot pepper freak and it is giving me all I can handle.

Bottle. Pepper and bready caramel malt aroma - peppers dominate but malt comes out more as it warms. Cloudy amber with small head. Light toffee malt flavor initially but this is quickly overwhelmed by the pepper burn. First sip set the back of my throat on fire and the burn didnít fade. Second sip lit up my tongue and took a couple more sips to get to the lips. Each subsequent sip was like a mini-flame thrower in the tongue and throat. Didnít think they could beat Crime but they did. However, canít tell if there was much more than the peppers though - only a masochist could handle much more than a few ounces.
