This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

A bit harsh, abrasive, and certainly aggressive...with everything but the coconut which is what had me excited. Bright, piney and resinous, with grapefruit pith and alcohol. None of the milky, toasty, creamy coconut that I was aching for. Not a hint, whiff, smidge, note, or inkling. Made me sad. Curled up in a fetal position, rocked back and forth, and sucked my thumb for a bit. Let’s just say I was a bit disappointed.

Bottle from Beer Frog in Spring Hill. Pours a mostly clear amber-copper with a white head. Nose is awesomely bitter tropical fruit, some light caramel, some papaya, and some peach/ stone fruit. Flavor is a burst of fruit with some bitter citrus, caramel, and maybe just a hint of coconut if I REALLY dig. Medium in body, a bruiser of a hop bomb, and very nice overall.

Very hazy golden pour, thin soapy white head and very light sticky lacing ..... aroma of light coconut, citrusy and tropical fruits, piney hops and caramel malts ..... taste is of piney, citrusy hops, light tropical fruits, rindy and bitter with some caramel malt and no coconut detected .... finish is dry with an oily mouthfeel, thick with a nice bitter hop finish .... solid ipa abv hidden well .... just a typical stone ipa with some frills

Clean straw gold pour with one finger of white head. Nose is pretty nice, floral and zesty with lightly sweet notes and a hint of coconut. Hop character is existent but nondescript. Flavor gets a little bitter and astringent/pretty astringent. Very dry and bitter on the finish. Touches of coconut.

bomber shared. have been antipating this one and well the pour was a clear orangish color with nice fluffy white head. the aroma of hops, piney with some citrus notes but no coconut in the aroma. the flavor of this medium bodied ipa was hops, piney and some resin with little splashes of citrus in the middle and on the back end but no coconut. no matter how hard we tried just couldnt find the coconut. leaving me a bit disappointed...it was like drinking their regular ipa and expecting something to happen..

22 oz. bottle. I don’t like coconut, so I’m not sure why I bought this. Pours a nice clear orange color with a small white head. Aroma of strong pine, hops, gloral notes, citrus notes, with touches -- and I mean this -- gentle touches on coconut. Flavor is strongly bitter with afterthoughts of coconut. Kind of funny. I was concerned this would be too much coconut, but Stone hit the right notes on this one.

22 oz bottle- Pours hazy golden with a white head that reduces to a blanket. Aroma is tropical fruity hops, lots of hops, some malty sweetness. The taste is tropical fruit, pungent hops arrive just after the swallow, nice amount of bitterness, I get the toasted part, but not too much of the actual coconut, which is odd. Very good IPA, for the true hop heads, extremely hop forward!

Tap at m five in las Cruces NM august 2013 Poura bright orange hue with a very small fizzy eggshell.white head. Nose of big resin light musty notes pinecone some tropical fruits some tangy sweetness. Flavors are all over the place.lots of pine and resin sweetness big sugary resin notes very dirty hop profile. Long resin finish. Ohmmeter doesn’t really impress me like a lot of their other opal releases.

Bomber pours clear orange with big two finger white head that slowly fades and leaves very nice lace. Aroma is apricot, some mango, light coconut but its there for sure. Taste is interesting, the coconut is like a coconut water taste mixed with short lived mango then it goes into bitter piney hops. Good brew but i was hoping for stronger coconut flavor.
