This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

[My bottle (660ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel] Pours a deep orange with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of resiny hops mainly along with some tropical fruit and biscuity malt -- I don’t get any coconut in the aroma. Flavour, again of resiny hops and tropical fruit but I do get a hint of coconut and the finish is long and bitter. Medium bodied. Coconut or not, this is a fantastic IPA.

Pours hazy gold with white head. Aroma is heavy on the malt side. Rich caramel malt with a litte bit of a dark roasty taste, maybe from the coconut burning? Great malt profile. On the hop side it is a little bit of tropical fruit and grass mostly. Medium body, fairly easy to drink. As it warms up alot more flavors start to come out including some slight coconut and alot more tropical fruit from the hops. Pretty good and a little different than the usual.

Small tasting from a 22 oz bottle a few nights ago. A solid IPA but there was no coconut in the aroma and flavor.

Not sure about coconut, but this is a very nice IPA nose dominated by tropical floral hop notes. Taste quite bitter with bready smooth maltiness and apricot-floral hop finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I’m not really sure I’m getting much coconut here. Malt nose with a deep copper orange color. No lacing. Taste is bready, sweet and malty. Disappointed overall.

Pours fairly clear golden / orange with a white head. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, mild earth, dry caramel malt, hints of coconut and a bit of sweetness. It has a medium / full smooth body that has a bit of roughness and prickly assertive carbonation. The flavor start with dry grapefruit, earth/pine, coconut in back, but more presence than the aroma. There is a dry malt in there as well. The finish is dry and hoppy with lots of pine and grapefruit. Nice balance with the coconut richness. Really nicely done.
