This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Pale orange in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of white grapefruit, pale and caramel malts, and sesame seeds. Flavors are of tired sweet orange and grapefruit, along with more heavy pale malt and toast, and maybe a bit of coconut meat? A bit heavy on the palate. A bit stale, although not all that old.

Kind of odd but not unpleasant...first sip tasted more like tea than beer. Not much coconut flavor to be found. As you were.

Looked, smelled and tasted good enough for an IPA. But as many others have said, there is no discernible presence of coconut at all. Kind of disappointing when you go into it expecting some coconut aroma or taste.

Draft. Aroma is a real piney hop. Appearance is a cloudy gold with a creamy head. Taste taste is hoppy tat is followed by a sweet earthiness, followed by a fresh, skunky hop flavor. Palate is a muted hops. Overall, a decent beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very enjoyable IPA with a bit of pine and definite juicy citrus notes. However, didn’t really pick up on the coconut.

[My bottle (660ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel] Pours a deep orange with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of resiny hops mainly along with some tropical fruit and biscuity malt -- I don’t get any coconut in the aroma. Flavour, again of resiny hops and tropical fruit but I do get a hint of coconut and the finish is long and bitter. Medium bodied. Coconut or not, this is a fantastic IPA.

Pours hazy gold with white head. Aroma is heavy on the malt side. Rich caramel malt with a litte bit of a dark roasty taste, maybe from the coconut burning? Great malt profile. On the hop side it is a little bit of tropical fruit and grass mostly. Medium body, fairly easy to drink. As it warms up alot more flavors start to come out including some slight coconut and alot more tropical fruit from the hops. Pretty good and a little different than the usual.

Small tasting from a 22 oz bottle a few nights ago. A solid IPA but there was no coconut in the aroma and flavor.

Not sure about coconut, but this is a very nice IPA nose dominated by tropical floral hop notes. Taste quite bitter with bready smooth maltiness and apricot-floral hop finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
