This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

I’m not really sure I’m getting much coconut here. Malt nose with a deep copper orange color. No lacing. Taste is bready, sweet and malty. Disappointed overall.

Pours fairly clear golden / orange with a white head. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, mild earth, dry caramel malt, hints of coconut and a bit of sweetness. It has a medium / full smooth body that has a bit of roughness and prickly assertive carbonation. The flavor start with dry grapefruit, earth/pine, coconut in back, but more presence than the aroma. There is a dry malt in there as well. The finish is dry and hoppy with lots of pine and grapefruit. Nice balance with the coconut richness. Really nicely done.

Hazy amber beer with a big off white head. The head tastes of coconut cream! Palate is sotfish with fine carbonation. Very light coconut. Light ripe orange hops. Whisper of skunk. Nice pine. Finishes smooth and soft. Comes together well and is very drinkable.

Bomber to a glass pilsner. Pours a straight yellow color, with a off white head that remains well. You can smell the coconut on the nose, and taste a hint of it, but not overpowering. Great citrus grapefruit hop notes resounding. I was skeptical, but this is a good one.

Clear orange pour with moderate carbonation and a thin head. Silky texture which almost immediately hits the hop high notes. Maybe a hint of coconut in the aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Was expecting more. Pours a very nice bright orange with a thick white head. Smells great, citrus and grapefruit, no coconut though. Taste is interesting, more grapefruit, but again, can't really taste any coconut. Slightly bitter finish. Had in the bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
