COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Bottle. A nice yellow orange color with a white head. There is a really nice citrus and grapefruit aroma. I had a hard time identifying the coconut, although perhaps it is coming through in the subtle sweetness in the aroma. A great body and finish.

Poured from a bomber. Aroma is pine, citrus, orange, and light coconut. Flavor is pine, orange, tropical fruit, pineapple, and very calm coconut back flavor. Really like this beer, the coconut compliments the hops so well :). I hope stone does this again next year.

Poured from a bomber to glass. Dark orange color with white head. Fruity citrus aroma. Taste is a hoppy floral IPA with coconut taste at the end. Good beer

Aroma: lots of citrus and tropical fruit, pine resin, not a lot of coconut in the nose. Appearance: golden pour, white head with average retention. Taste: big hop profile - citrus and tropical fruit, grapefruit with a bit of pineapple, nice medium+ bitterness that dissipates in the finish. Coconut shows up mid-taste and becomes more apparent as the beer warms. The coconut is present but maybe a bit subtle, but I’d rather that be the case than have the base beer masked by a coconut overdose. Palate: medium body and carbonation, slight sweetness in the finish. Overall: a solid IPA, nice mellow coconut notes, good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden - light amber, with a nice white head. Lots of hops, citrus, bitterness, pine, tropical fruit, dry malt base, and nice sweet toasted coconuts buried underneath the hops. Those that can’t taste the coconut are missing something because it’s definitely there, but it doesn’t kick you in the face. A tasty IPA, although the homebrew that won this competition had quite a bit more coconut.

Very citrusy on the nose with some strong floral flavors and hints of vanilla, coconut, and pine. A bitter, piney flavor really lingers on the tongue and isn’t great, however the initial taste is quite good.

Clear golden colored pour. Big soapy white head. Plenty of lacing. Aroma of lemon and malt. Very much an IPA with a big bitter front. Not much coconut presence. Hops and hops is mostly the taste. Bitter, bitter, bitter in the back. Pretty good.

August 6, 2013 - bottle from AV3. Clear golden pour with big white head that stuck around and lacing in my Stone pint glass. Aroma was citrus and piney hops, possibly some coconut in there with a deep sniff. Taste was malty sweet to start, then moved into a very mild toasted coconut and finished with a dry citrus and pine bitterness that was very drinkable for someone that is not a huge hop head. I was disappointed in the muted coconut aroma and taste with a beer that has coconut in the name.

Bottle. Nice looking beer with a clear golden color and a frothy white head that craters on down. I can definitely smell coconut (both fleshy and lightly toasted) but it’s not as dominant a smell as pine and hop bitterness. Taste is clean, dry pine and bitterness with a bit of sweeter malt with some bready notes and some light coconut popping up here and there amongst the bitterness. Clean and dry mouthfeel. I like it. Good, bitter IPA but the coconut is certainly not the main feature.

Pours a nice copper color with a sturdy head. Smells promising - strong fruity/resinous hop aromas mixed with coconut. The combo almost creates an apricot type smell, pretty nice. Aaaand then I drink it - this stuff is boozy and very bitter. The creamy sweet vanilla coconut flavors don't exactly marry that well with these super bitter resinous hops. Maybe I should have sat on this one for a couple of weeks to let it die down a little? Bitter finish. Nice body/mouthfeel. It gets better the more I sip on it but overall, this one's just not for me.
