This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Clear orange with almost no head. Fresh grassy hop aroma. Smooth and light flavor, clean and hoppy with a touch of fruity coconut on the finish ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a clear light copper color with a foamhy white head. Grassy hoppy note with an underlying toasted sweet coconut note. If I hadn’t known, would I have sniffed out the coconut? Probably not, but since I do know, I can smell it ;o). Medium mouthfeel. Malty sweet start with a nice level of hoppy bitterness. Coconut notes at the end. Surprisingly decent given the mix of ingredients used.

22 ounce bottle - $7.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a bright, clear, yellow-orange body with a hefty, foaming, whitish head. Moderate lacing.

Smell: Pale malts, bready, a bit cookie-hinting before the stronger, more fragrant hops hit the nose -- fresh flowers, citrus fruits, mango. The coconut addition remains rather delicate, timid even.

Taste: Lightly bready pale malts with a touch of sugar cookie to it, though, don’t get me wrong, there’s very little sweetness present. Floral, lemony hops, also a bit of additional tropical fruit, even some apricot. Brightly bitter throughout. The coconut remains regrettably subtle. A little toastiness and coconut peeks through on the dry, bitter, acidic finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Slightly oily on the tongue.

Overall: Pass. I was left wanting more coconut flavor as very little showed up in the final product, at least for me.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear copper with a creamy white head. Aroma is citrus/melon. Med body. Flavor is very mixed fruit with a touch of pine. Nice caramel backbone. It is not harshly bitter, and it is not entirely dry. Dry is arguable. But the flavor is very delicious. Comparing impressions 2 of us were hard put to find coconut. Toasting coconut may mar the flavor into unfamiliarity here. Very good drink - coconut or no.

Not impressed. Almost no coconut, very slight on finish. Not enough standout as an IPA either. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

IPA night. Pours a nice clear copper. Aroma is moderately citrus. No coconut at all. Flavor is spicy, peppery, dank. Again no coconut. Thin mouthfeel that finishes dry. Mild bitterness that isn't harsh. Overall, not impressed. Wouldn't buy. 28/50 ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I’ve heard a bit of gripe about this brew. Before enjoying all I got from coworkers and friends is there was not enough coconut, period. Either I drink enough coconut water to pick up on the coconut or I got the perfect bottle because this is what I’d dreamt of a coconut ipa tasting like. Pours a clear golden with a thick white head that sticks around from start to finish. The aroma is incredible, melons and coconut, slightly earthy and citrusy. Maybe because the coconut is not paired with vanilla but citrus, it is misleading to people? The taste of flavors for me is pretty much a classic, well put together IPA with coconut undertones and a slightly oily medium to thick body finishing with earthy hops and a some what dry finish. I think they nailed it! I respect the minimalism and subtle deliciousness that this beer offers and am glad this was not sweet or desert like.

On tap at Belmont Station Bier Cafe, pours a clear golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of piney hops, subtle coconut, and some citrus. Flavour doesn’t bring out a whole lot of coconut, though it is there buried underneath the piney hops. Very bitter but refreshingly hoppy at the same time. The coconut is not too prominent, but is executed expertly subtly. Awesome IPA.

pours light golden with a slim, but thickish white head. big tropical fruit and dank aroma with some coconut to finish.. taste is mostly resin hoppy with a but a tropical fruit, but the finish is all alcohol. maybe I got a bad bottle.

Weak citrus, floral hop aroma... Clear, golden yellow in color... Flavor is dry and crisp, notes of hemp, tropical fruit, floral and spicy hops on the palate... Don't taste any coconuts... Still a solid ipa ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
