COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Pours dark yellow with white head. Floral, citrus hops. Bitter throughout, lean and crisp. This is a great ipa, like Stone’s regular ipa, for which it tastes almost the same. This is a good beer, but I didn’t get any cocconut, which is why a rated it lower in the overall score.

22 oz. bottle. Pours bright orange with a tight thin white head that leaves a wispy film and collar. Aroma is piny grapefruit slightly resinous and subtle sweetness. Taste is bitter pine fruit and resinous with good mild malt balance and spice with a hidden sweetness. Palate is medium solid carbonation and sticky dry finish. Really nice IPA, and I am still trying to find any distinct coconut.

Bottle
Aroma: Very intense citrus, grapefruit, with very subtle notes of bread, toast and alcohol.
Appearance: Crystal clear orange/amber with short lasting white head. Good lacing
Taste: Grapefruit, tropical fruit, bitter citrus rind
Palate: Thin body, with a filling mouthfeel. Some bitterness midpalate, and a slightly bitter finish with some toast-like flavors
Overall: Pretty good; coconut is hidden as far as I can tell (maybe a sensation in the aftertaste), and would probably have a hard time breaking through the citrusy hops. A bit bitter, but still quite enjoyable.

Bomber from Spirits Brick. Pouerd a great looking rusty orange body with lots of rising carbonation and a super long lasting large foamy white head. Aroma was hop resin, sweet ruby red grapefruit, marmalade topped toast, bark and lots of dankness. Medium to full bodied with softer to average carbonation and a nice bitter and dry finish that lingers. Flavor of dry toast, fresh hop cones, resin, grapefruit, mango rind, lemon and dry bread. Solid IPA/DIPA.

Bottle. A nice yellow orange color with a white head. There is a really nice citrus and grapefruit aroma. I had a hard time identifying the coconut, although perhaps it is coming through in the subtle sweetness in the aroma. A great body and finish.

Poured from a bomber. Aroma is pine, citrus, orange, and light coconut. Flavor is pine, orange, tropical fruit, pineapple, and very calm coconut back flavor. Really like this beer, the coconut compliments the hops so well :). I hope stone does this again next year.

Poured from a bomber to glass. Dark orange color with white head. Fruity citrus aroma. Taste is a hoppy floral IPA with coconut taste at the end. Good beer

Aroma: lots of citrus and tropical fruit, pine resin, not a lot of coconut in the nose. Appearance: golden pour, white head with average retention. Taste: big hop profile - citrus and tropical fruit, grapefruit with a bit of pineapple, nice medium+ bitterness that dissipates in the finish. Coconut shows up mid-taste and becomes more apparent as the beer warms. The coconut is present but maybe a bit subtle, but I’d rather that be the case than have the base beer masked by a coconut overdose. Palate: medium body and carbonation, slight sweetness in the finish. Overall: a solid IPA, nice mellow coconut notes, good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden - light amber, with a nice white head. Lots of hops, citrus, bitterness, pine, tropical fruit, dry malt base, and nice sweet toasted coconuts buried underneath the hops. Those that can’t taste the coconut are missing something because it’s definitely there, but it doesn’t kick you in the face. A tasty IPA, although the homebrew that won this competition had quite a bit more coconut.
