This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer theyíd ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangsterís skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Draft - Orange, passion fruit and a bit of pine. Clear gold and a thin white head. Nice bitter IPA with a bit of fruit and grapefruit and the coconut adds a nice upper palate sweetness. Coconut is subtle but you get the roast, and finish is the standard Stone IPA.

Subtile unsweetened coconut. A bit of tropical fruit hops. Better in theory. Finish tastes like licking the outside of a coconut. Not as good as i was expecting.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Pours a translucent new penny copper color with a small white head that recedes to a film. The aroma is soft and mild with a light citrus scent. The taste is decent bitter grapefruit hops set in a neutral malt base. I donít get much in the way of coconut, it must be very subtle. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is long and dry with lingering grapefruit. Overall: A decent summer IPA, loved it.

Bottle shared by a coworker. Pours a golden to yellow with white head. Aroma is more tropical and bitter than any coconut. Really none until this one warms significantly. Taste is again bitter and resinous with some bitter unripe tropical fruit. The coconut is not there at all when it is cold. As it warms you get a roasted coconut like mounds bar thing going on. Nothing special.

22oz bomber, ENJOY BY 10/23/13, from Olive Tree Market in OB, $6.49. Clear orange amber with a one finger off-white head, not the best retention (due to the coconut oils? or did they do something to remedy this?). First cracking the bottle and taking a whiff I got no coconut, but rather some fruity New Zealand or Australian dry hops going on. In my glass I get the same hops--tropical fruit--but a definite lightly sweet coconut note that so far blends well with the hops of choice. The flavor, however, is quite bitter right off the bat, and even to the point of being a bit danky, which I usually like, but the bitterness is really huge and detracting here. Iím no longer getting any coconut due to the overpowering bitterness, but there is a little bit of tropical fruit hops left. Just ridiculously bitter, which becomes the flavor of the beer. Dry finish with bitterness peaking too damn high to be enjoyable for a whiny guy like me. Moderate carbonation with a medium body. The aroma is nice, but, you know how I feel at this point.

Clear orange color, moderate sized white head with decent lacing and retention. Citrus aroma with some butterscotch and very light coconut. Medium bodied, somewhat sweet, light nut and caramel flavors. I wonít lie, I thought this was a dumb concept, but the end result is just a bland IPA with a very light coconut flavor. Not what I guessed it would taste like (coconut is very light) but I guess Iím just a sucker that wants a good IIPA or IPA instead of getting creative. If it aint broke donít fix it.

UPDATED: AUG 2, 2013 Aroma is immediate fruity hops with a resignating mango/pineapple and metallic coconut on the nose. It is a light copper color with some nice lacing on the glass. Extremely fruity flavors with mango, orange, pineapple and strong hop bitterness on the palate. Finish leaves a herby hop taste. Overall, it is pleasantly hoppy and fruity but the coconut flavor is not as prominent as I had expected. It comes through more on the aroma but more in a metallic form. Nevertheless, a pleasantly tropical IPA. Great for summer. EDIT: Poured this into a tulip shaped glass and it made a world of difference. The coconut is much more present and it is extremely refreshing and tropical. Delicious.

Poured from the bottle. The best part about the beer is the appearance. It pours golden yellow with a perfect about of head. Aroma has a very slight hint of coconut, but not much. Taste also has a hint of coconut and a ton of bitterness. Itís just a harsh IPA, which Iím not a fan of.
