This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Tap at Congregation in Azusa, CA. Clear, medium orange pour with larger buttermilk head. Great retention and lace. Nose is sticky orange, sweaty/salt, butterscotch, dark sugar. Taste is butterscotch, mild bitterness, no coconut sadly. Palate is bitter, nutty, aggressive with just a touch of vegetal density in nose and taste. The base IPA is solid but the coconut is completely absent.

Pour from 22 oz bomber. Pours a amber orange with a small white head which fades to very little lacing. Aroma is of citrus, sweet malts, pine, dank hops, tropical fruits, and very faint coconut. Taste is citrus, pine, tropical fruits, sweet malts, and some light coconut. Has a medium-full body with a semi creamy body with a semi dry, pretty bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty IPA that would be even better if there was more coconut.

Clear golden pour with white foamy bubbly head. Aroma is lots of tropical fruits and slight coconut. Taste is super bitter and tropical with a slight sweetness. Wish there was more coconut in the finish but overall its still quite nice. Minutes later, I can still taste the bitterness on the back of my tongue.

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Liquid appeared a shiny gold brass hue while a small delicate marshmallow foam head rested atop. Aroma is big and bold with a whiff of coconut water combined with a soft addition of skunky chronic like hops. The drink is crisp and clean with high quality ingredients such as a spicy bitter green hops that aren’t overpowering while a kiss of artificial coconut butter really makes things strange yet interesting. The malts are also apparent and really hold things in the balance on this COCO IPA.

30 July 3013, bottle. Yellow, clear, no bubbles. Nose is lemon citrus hops and faint coconut. Thin body and moderately fizzy. Grapefruit hops and faint suntan lotion. Good. Wish there was more coconut. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 oz. bottle. It pours a really clear golden orange with an off white head. The aroma has peaches, pineapple some caramel and noticeable coconut. The flavor is malty with strong fruity hop flavor and more coconut before the bitterness overpowers it in the finish. Pretty drinkable and tasty.

Bomber. Fairly clear golden pour with some head and little retention. Nose of citrus, pine, and hops. Taste of grapefruit, citrus peel, pine, and floral hops. Bitterness throughout with very little sweetness. Coconut is not noticeable at all. Good IPA if you like hop bitterness throughout with very little sweetness. I went into it thinking coconut would be very present and its far from that

22oz bottle. Pours amber with a white head. Good lacing. Pine, citrus and tropical notes but not much coconut flavor. Finishes very bitter which lingers. Pretty good IPA just was hoping for more of a coconut presence. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
