So called because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate. 100+ IBUs. Bracingly bitter. Thick, pungent hop aroma. We would say that no hops were injured in the brewing of this beer, but that would be a massive lie. In fact, the words "Stone Ruination IPA" are what older hop vines use to cause little hop vines to quiver with fright and lose sleep at night . We at Stone honor the brutal massacre of countless hops with this "Liquid poem to the glory of the hop!" Paganism at its best!

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2006 Pours orangish amber with small thin head. Aroma wasnt as strong as i expected. Flavour was pretty tasty though. Lots of hops in this one. Nice and bitter but still very well balanced. Some roasty flavour in there too. Overall a pretty good IPA

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2006 Re-rate, previous rating 4.0 This poured an orange colour with a luxurious tall and creamy head. There was a ton of lacing left behind on the glass, even when finished it had a large blob of foam in the bottom of my glass. The aroma was lots of pine hops with some grassy citrus in there as well. My palate is pretty much immediatly assulted with hops, bitter, beatuiful hops. There is more pine resin like hops in the flavour with a larger hint of citrus than in the aroma. The malt evens the brew out, but doesn’t lend much of its own profile. If I had the opportunity to get this more often, I would. It is truly a fantastic IIPA

This amber ale poured with a fluffy white head that dissipated quickly. As advertised, there is an intensely hoppy flavor, with a fruity finish. The effect of the massive hopping is, surprisingly, well balanced, but is probably still a bit much for all but hopheads.

My favorite Imperial IPA. Reminds me so much of their 5th Anniversary. Malty with a slightly sweet taste. And then come the hops. An almost overwhelming (but in a good way) hoppy aroma and nicely bitter. Pretty close to being hop candy.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2005 btl. nice, bright amber colour. brief release of gasses with a small head that dissipates rapidly. smells light with hops and citrus. i found this beer to taste a bit flat. otherwise, the flavours were mostly good:malty, nutty, ripe fruit, alcohol, and HOPS. too many hops, almost. it upsets the balance of the beer and is slightly sickining paired with the lack of carbonation. still, twas a good try.

Enticing copper colour, hoppy aroma. Nice crisp and bitter taste, a touch much on hops for me but not by much and I’m no hophead for sure.

I hate to give a Stone brew such a low score, but this was like going to the brew shop, grabbing a handful of hop pellets and jamming them in your mouth. I mean, I love hops, but man, this stuff is out of control.

Golden amber color w/ lasting head and thick lasting lacing. The nose was full of flowers and citrus notes w/ a slight alcohol sweetness. The flavor was piney and citrusy w/ a slight alcohol sweetness and hint of flowers. The mouthfeel was very bitter w/ medium effervescence and a light body.

Bottle. Poured a dark amber. Nose was strong hops and more hops. Carbonation was moderate to weak. Head was thin, though. Tasted like hops and lager (interesting). VERY HOPPY! Excellent beer!!!

A big Domo Arigatou to Joshpiledean (Dan) for this treat! A clear copper beauty with a thick foamy creamy colored head. Oh man, industrial strength hops. Crush truckloads of pine and cedar needles, throw in the rinds of 100 white grapefruits and a few handfulls of wildflowers, blend thouroughly and it might come close to this. OMG, delicious doesn’t come close to describing this hop juice. But there in lies the surprise, it isn’t just hop juice, there’s enough malt here to ’almost’ balance this. With 100 IBU’s, this couldn’t really be balanced by anything short of pure maple syrup or raw honey but Greg and the lads at Stone have done one hell of a job trying! I can’t wait to get back to California to drink this on a daily basis (even though I will be unable to appreciate the flavors of sushi for a week afterwards). I have found Nirvana.
