NomDeBeer (397), Maryland, USA Aug 11, 2008 Outstanding DIPA. Tons of citrus hop aroma, flavor, and bitterness. Sure to please any hop head. Full-bodied, very drinkable and enjoyable. Perfect amounts of alcohol and carbonation. This is a desert island beer, and definitely one of my favorites. Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 10, 2008 bottle thanks to kegbear. Very solid aroma of hops, but the taste doesn’t really slap you around the way Arrogant Bastard does. Its very bitter and hoppy. Definite good beer would buy again ElGaucho56 (386), USA Aug 9, 2008 Draft at sunset grille, Allston. Pours a dark golden-orange with a mild crisp head into a snifter. Nose is pungently hoppy, of course, with strong tangerine citrus tones, piney resin, and a mild cracker malt character lurking somewhere underneath. Hops hops and more hops on the palate, mildly sticky but a little thin bodywise, progressing from a rich grapefruit through to a strong bitter vegetable/root that burns the palate. Certainly a hop bomb, but that’s its charm. BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle. Best by 8/26/08. Ah, a fresh bottle! This was the first IPA I’ve ever had even before rating on RateBeer. I remember from that experience an assault of bitterness. But it wasn’t unpleasant. Mmm, I’m excited about this revisit.
It pours a translucent golden orange with a pale white head that diminishes to a thin film that lasts for quite some time. Wow, the aroma is so hoppy. There is a good amount of grapefruit, orange, and lemon citrus with strong rounded notes of a sweet caramel. Pine is prevalent but not overpowering. There is some grass and some subtler dry resin notes. The flavour is an intense blast of hops. I feel like I’m chewing on hops. Citrus flavours aren’t as dominant as their aromas. The resin notes, however, are more widespread. Pine is evident, but, like the aroma, not overpowering. For a few seconds before your palate is overwhelmed by an explosion of bitterness, you can taste the round caramel flavour. Though, quickly after, the bitterness hits hard and lasts into the finish. The finish is dry and extremely bitter. Resin notes prevail through the finish as citrus continue to be more subtle. Pine is also evident but fades quickly.
The bitterness is an assault to the entire palate. I thought that maybe after having had quite a few bitter beers, this one wouldn’t live up to how I remember it being. I was wrong. It’s still an assault as I remember it being. Ah, I’m glad I got this fresh. Derek881 (486), Frederick, Maryland, USA Aug 8, 2008 Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Cloudy straw color at the base, becoming more amber-like towards the top, with a thick appearance. A good sized, very foamy and bubbly white head with good retention. Strong hop aroma with mostly pine and citrus scents, maybe some earthy tones too and a slight fruity maltyness. The flavor is decisively bitter and hop-dominated, with a slight grainy sour effect. A very full, rich, and wet mouthfeel, with a smooth, dry finish and above average amounts of carbonation. An exceptional IPA, one of the better ones I have had. NoiZe (1288), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands Aug 8, 2008 Tasted somewhere along my trip through the States.
Orange colored brew. Spicy and hoppy. Very smooth IPA. KimJohansen (6645), Copenhagen V, Denmark Aug 7, 2008 Clear deep golden large off white head. Sweet aroma with loads off hops, caramel, grapefruit and piney notes. Sweet flavor with grapefruit, citric, mild caramel and delicious hoppy notes. Very bitter end. yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 7, 2008 From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours hazy orange with a lacing white head. Hoppy and mild spiced aroma. Flavour is smooth hoppy and mild spiced. Followed by a mild bitterness. Smooth fruity hops finish. Lovely!
