COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
So called because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate. 100+ IBUs. Bracingly bitter. Thick, pungent hop aroma. We would say that no hops were injured in the brewing of this beer, but that would be a massive lie. In fact, the words "Stone Ruination IPA" are what older hop vines use to cause little hop vines to quiver with fright and lose sleep at night . We at Stone honor the brutal massacre of countless hops with this "Liquid poem to the glory of the hop!" Paganism at its best!

650ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber, with a moderate off-white head, which lasts fairly well and leaves good lacing. Resin, citrus oil, pepper and pine needle hops sit over a caramel malt base to create the aroma. Potent peppery and grapefruit hops up front soften into a touch of preserved lemon. Quite rich caramel malt gives it plenty of mid-palate backbone, with razor sharp pepper, grapefruit and pine hops in the finish and a lingering bitter aftertaste. This is a seriously good IIPA, with lashings of bitterness and enough malt to balance them. A deserving classic.

Bottle. A- Caramel, malty, biscuits, sweet, doughy. A- Orange color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Very bitter, caramel, bready. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, lingering bitter finish. O- My bottle had almost a year of age on it which definitely brought out the biscuit and sweet bread notes, but it was still bitter as hell. I may be the only person on Earth who thinks Stone is far from the best brewer there is. I am yet to have anything by them that isnít aggressive as hell and just flat out overrated. Thanks, but no thanks.

lemme just say this up front: this IS the standard bearer for west coast IPAs. this baby slips and slides on a massive hop bed between the IPA and double IPA line IMO. huge grapefruit, pine and orange chewy resin. sticky icky bitter aint no quitter. thank god you will not find your thick candy bar malted milk in this brew (yes im calling you out colorado IIPA brewers! ;)) however the malt that is supplied is wonderfully creamy but must labor mightily to support the massive hop drop. and labor it does to wonderful effect. west coast represent!

Sadly my 4-pack of Ruination had an Enjoy By date of 12/13/13. At the time of my purchase, this batch was more than 6 months past its prime according to the bottling date. Happily, Ruination was no worse for the less than ideal conditions. Yes, the caramel character of the malt had been given time to poke through the dense hop profile in the aroma and taste, but the hops had hardly lost any of their edge. As promised, Ruination delivered a hell of a lot of grapefruit and pine bitterness. The finish is predictably crisp thanks to the 100+ IBUís and the 8.2% ABV provides a bit of warmth. Whatís surprising is that the lingering conclusion is juicy rather than dry. Perhaps "juicy" is the wrong word. Itís mostly an orange rind sharpness that sticks to the roof of the mouth but thereís also a hint of sweet orange juice mixed in. When compared to the bone-dry finishes of many Imperial IPAís, Stoneís Ruination is surprisingly refreshing. Tread (or drink) with care, though. This ale is unabashedly created exclusively for hop heads and will seem masochistic to just about anyone else.

Killer Californian hop bomb. A machine-gun of citrus hops to the mouth. Indeed a total palate ruination, dry and brutal, not sure it is worth drinking anything past that one...

Bottle. Pours light amber with small white head. Nose is mostly earthy and floral hops. Some nice caramel in the taste. Great DIPA.

Tasted from bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with white head. Aroma is tropical and citrus fruits with pine. Grapefruit, orange peel prominent. Taste is definitely bitter. They weren't lying on the description (which Stone always does an impeccable job). More pine on the taste but still flavors of grapefruit and orange peel, papaya. Just a hint of malt present as a backbone. Definitely a top tier IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
