COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
So called because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate. 100+ IBUs. Bracingly bitter. Thick, pungent hop aroma. We would say that no hops were injured in the brewing of this beer, but that would be a massive lie. In fact, the words "Stone Ruination IPA" are what older hop vines use to cause little hop vines to quiver with fright and lose sleep at night . We at Stone honor the brutal massacre of countless hops with this "Liquid poem to the glory of the hop!" Paganism at its best!

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2008 Original Rating Sept 13, 2004: (Thanks to SDbruboy for this!) Dark amber color with a medium head. Sudden onslaught of hops up front in the aroma and taste. Kind of mellows out after that. It tones down into an actually smooth hops taste with a good citrus zing and malt backbone. Not nearly as overpowering as I was expecting. One of the better balanced IIPAs out there. 7/4/8/4/17 Re-rate July 17, 2008: Man... been ages since I’ve had this. Ages, and lots of beers. Copper color with a large head Strong citrus aroma right off the bat, then it fades into a kind of grassy-ness. Piney taste. Very resinous. Moderate caramel malt, more of the grass flavor. Alcohol well hidden. Oddly, not too bitter at all. I would call this a pretty solid IPA. A double? No way.

ABUSEDGOAT (2330) - California, USA - JUL 25, 2005
UPDATED: SEP 2, 2007 Pours an amber body with a moderate head. Grapefruity and citrusy hops dominate the aroma with resiny notes. Some caramel backing, but not a lot of malt complexity. It’s funny to look back and think this used to be one of the most bitter beers I had. One of my favorites from Stone, but that doesn’t say much.

Clear amber with a thick murky hop aroma. Strong hop flavour, and bitter but not that bitter. There’s better flavour in their regular IPA.

Copper brown, small white head. Very hoppy, but also oaky and smokey aroma. Hoppy flowery and very bitter. Some sweetness in the front. Long bitter aftertaste. Hopheads paradise.

Overwhelming and not to be taken lightly? I found this to be a wonderful Imperial IPA but somehow it didn’t live up to my expectations. Fantastic aroma but the hop flavor seems a little low due to some malt overload. It’s bitter but the hop complexity seems one dimensional. Still enjoyable and will try it again.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2007 Rerate. Draft at Frisco’s. Clear pale body with a small off-white head. The aroma is floral and citrus with light cotton candy sweetness. The flavor is just lightly sweet and moderately bitter with grapefruit, tangerine and caramel. Medium body is round with light carbonation. Decent, but unremarkable. I had this next to Clipper City’s Loose Cannon and the Loose Cannon was easily better.

22oz bottle from OhioDad...Thanks Scott! Pours a deep orange color with a big foamy white head. nose is kinda faint, light piney notes and some citrus is involved. taste is quite unimpressive. Hops of course are the main thing, very little malt backbone here to support the hops, decent bitterness in the finish.

tons of hops, in both the aroma and the flavor, but i think this needs a little more malt balance to put it into the upper echelon of IIPA’s. lots of pine, some citrus, and a little bit of grass, but not enough backbone to counter all of the hops. the bitterness is a bit too much, and the overall character of this is coser to a regular IPA than an imperial. as part 5 of IIPA Sunday, this was a little dissapointing.

Bottle. Golden brown with a big off-white head. Aromas are fairly light malts with earthy dry pine and petrol fume-like alcohol vapours. Flavours are fruity with caramel. Very prickly hops, dry, bitter and mouth numbing in its alcohol. Too strong to drink too many for sure. Almost overbearing.
