So called because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate. 100+ IBUs. Bracingly bitter. Thick, pungent hop aroma. We would say that no hops were injured in the brewing of this beer, but that would be a massive lie. In fact, the words "Stone Ruination IPA" are what older hop vines use to cause little hop vines to quiver with fright and lose sleep at night . We at Stone honor the brutal massacre of countless hops with this "Liquid poem to the glory of the hop!" Paganism at its best!

Nice aroma, very citrusy hops. Appearance has a plain gold color, whereas I expected the red tinge you see in a lot of IPA’s. Persistent white foam. Flavor is bitter from hops. It is a well balanced beer, but I was expecting more. Nice lingering hop bite on the finish. Medium mouthfeel. This beer had a lot of hype to live up to. Good IPA, but I feel IPA’s like 90 minute kick the %$#@ out of this one. And this fu!@#er was expensive!

Sweet hop action wafts in from 3 feet away. A touch pongy early but it soon blows off. Thickish palate with plenty of hops but surprisingly not a huge malt impact. Broad palate structure. Finishes with some raisens and a bitter edge.

Honestly I was expecting a lot more hop intensity. Pours slightly hazy orange-brown. Hop notes and sweetness smell. Taste is medium bodied, smooth sweet maltiness and a fair amount of piney hops. This didn’t have near the intensity or harshness I was expecting. So far, Sierra’s Barleywine was the hoppiest I’ve tasted. Still a very good beer.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2009 On tap at Papago. Re-rate. Pours a hazy orange color with a trim off-white head. Smells of bitter hops and citrus. Tastes, more specifically, of waxy grapefruit, flour, and plenty of hops. Seems to lack a little salt and an element of cream or sweetness to balance this one out. Not bad, though.

Pours a copper color with a small off white head. Aroma of grapefruits hops and minor malts. Initial taste of syrupy caramel malts and minor bitter hops. Prefer the regular IPA better because of the stronger hops

UPDATED: MAR 11, 2012 Re-rate 3/7/12: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Dagan. Clear golden. Aroma of slightly stale hops with some citrus and floral notes. Bitter flavor with light sweetish graininess and some slightly stale hops. Medium-bodied. Past its prime but still OK. 7/3/6/3/13=3.2

Re-rate 2/22/12: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Lee. Clear deep golden. Aroma of slightly stale hops and some fruity notes. Very bitter hoppy flavor, a bit resinous, a bit grapefruity and a bit stale. Medium-bodied. Not bad, but past its prime. 6/3/7/3/13=3.2

Re-rate 10/29/11: Bottle sample at a tasting at Porter & Sons. Thanks to whoever brought this one. Hazy golden. Pleasant citric hoppy aroma. Flavor has a bit of sweet maltiness and a hoppy bitter finish. Medium-bodied. Decent but seems past its peak. 7/4/7/3/14=3.5

(10/23/08) Bottle drank at my hostel room in New York. Clear deep golden color with a medium stable white head. Aroma full of hops, resin, some pine needles, some flowery notes, cookies and some caramel. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, cookie dough and some fruity notes. Continues with a very bitter hoppy attack (but still remains quite balanced) with pine and some grapefruit and light alcoholic hints. A very pleasant DIPA. 8/4/7/4/15=3.8

courtesy of Allen - hazy orange colour with a little white head; aroma of apricot and quinces; quite perfumy; full-bodied and very bitter, aggressive; dry and very bitter fruity finish - terribly one-dimensional and quite a deception considering the high score on ratebeer

Ridiculous. Huge citrusy/piney aroma. Huge hop flavor and bitterness as expected. Too bitter for my taste but why else would you get this. Stone’s regular IPA is actually really good (I don’t like hoppy beers) but this is that times 10. Solid but not my cup o’ tea/beer.

Poured a cloudy orange/yellow with a nice head and plenty of lacing. Smells piney and thats about it. Tastes a little of pine and hops, but a strong taste of green apple peel. Kind of malty, syrupy, good carbonation. I hate apples, apples are gay. So its hard to really stay positive when the beer reminds me of that devil fruit. I dont see what people see in this one. It tastes like Maharaja-Light.

The nose is grassy, the head poured is pretty low and there is great lacing on the glass. The color is medium orange/yellow, and the bitter hops do linger on the palette with this one. There is good carbonation and the palette is oily. The nose also contains orange blossom honey which I find to be really nice. Overall a solid DIPA, but not one of my all time favorites either.
