In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality.

Rating #1292 - 21.10.2014 - Stone Launch @craftbeeryeg. Pours a golden yellow with a carbonated white foam that goes on for days Aroma is mild funk, mild floral lavender, citrus. Palate is actually quite sweet, lots of floral lavender notes, as well as a sticky sweetness. Mild sour note from the yeast. Not enough gumption in the funk for a real rippin’ saison, but this is certainly light, sweet, and crushable.

Pours a clear, pale golden orange color with straw colored edges and a one finger white foam head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Visible carbonation bubbling up. Earthy, herbal aroma with some musty farmhouse yeast followed by hints of zesty spice, citrus fruit, bread and ester-y light fruit notes. Subtle earthy hop presence with grass and hay notes complimenting the funky saison character. There’s also a touch of peppery spice that’s reminiscent of clove/coriander. pale malt presence with some bread and biscuit followed by apple and pear sweetness. The citric quality starts to show a bit more as it warms with prominent lemon juice and pith. Decent complexity in the aroma while retaining the farmhouse/saison feel, yet nothing really stands out. Light body with a crisp peppery spice presence that’s countered by bready yeast, farmhouse funk, light fruit notes and tart citrus sweetness. The zesty spice is prominent with hints of white pepper, ginger, grains of paradise and coriander. This is complimented by a subtle earthy/grassy hop presence and a decent amount of musty saison yeast. Decent amount of funk without overpowering the other notes giving off hints of wet hay, straw and grass. Some bread and biscuit flavor present mid-palate followed by apple, pear and citrus sweetness. Again, the citrus flavor becomes more prominent as it warms with slightly tart lemon juice and zesty lemon rind. Overall, the flavor profile is very similar to the aroma in that nothing really stands out but there is an excellent balance of interesting flavor. Not in the top tier of saisons I’ve tried but it’s light, flavorful and dangerously sessionable. A decent go to beer for warmer weather months.

Not as complex as I would expect and no hint of hops. Strong citrus peel flavor. Finish is light and leaves me thinking that I just enjoyed an energy drink.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow gold body under a one inch craggy and frothy white head that had nice retention. The nose is slightly botanical and citrusy with some herbal notes, light wheat and pale malt, and some yeastiness. The flavor is quite spicy and peppery, dry, a nice citrusy zestiness, tempered slightly by the slight yeastiness on the finish. The lemon comes out a bit strong in the flavor for me in the middle, but it fades towards the finish and lets the Saison qualities come out a bit more. Dry and very lively on the palate, enhancing the citrusy qualities. Decent beer, a little heavy handed with the lemon for me, but enjoyable enough.
