In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality.

Tap at stone Pasadena. Pours yellow some head and medium lacing. Nose is lemon and grassy. Aromas of lemon, grassy, peppery with some yeast in the background. Taste medium bitter, light sweet and a touch of sour. Medium/light body with lively carbonation.

Poured a clear pale yellow. Coming from a brewery that specializes in hoppy, over the top beers, it’s no surprise that they can’t do a nuanced beer like a saison.

Sampled during Julio’s Spring Beer Fest. Not one of Stone’s better efforts, better to stick with their IPAs and leave this one on the shelf for somebody else.

Pours rich golden with short lived white head. Smell is musty, herbal and spiced. Taste is spiced and moderately hoppy too with a light bitterness in the finish which is nice, considering I like hops and not saisons too much. I think I’m actually tasting a bit of the thyme and lavendar, but I could be reaching. Definitely a light floral flavor either from the lavender or hops. As far as saisons go, this is one of my favorites, but still not something I love. Medium body and crisp carbonation.

12oz bottle. Pours clear pale orange with a slight pinkness. Spicy aromas of ginger, lemons, and floral notes. Bold flavors of soapy ginger with lemon orange. Somewhat over spiced. Spicy pepper burn with a dry finish. Bold and Stone are synonymous.

This is a solid saison with tasty floral notes. Nice and light and very enjoyable.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 12oz ($2.25): Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is slight barnyard, with some bubblegum and a bit of hops. Taste is a bit herbal and a bit funky. Lemony citrus and floral flavors in there as well. Low bitterness; quite dry. That said, I wasn’t impressed by Stone’s foray into the saison world.

Bottle poured hazed orange with white head. Nose is white pepper, fruity yeast, floral. Taste is moderately dry, big floral potpourri coriander thing, white pepper, citrus peel. Just a bit too much of the spice going on for my personal tastes. Had higher hopes as a reasonable priced six pack of traditional saison would be awesome.

Pours yellow with a visible amount of particulate haze. Head is weak and doesn’t lace too well. Nose is spicy, lemony, some esters, the spices are moderately complex but heavy on the grapefruit rind spice, pepper, clove, and dried herbs. Flavor is similar with spicy phenols dominating. Not a bad beer but not the best saison around either.

A saison with the stone hoppy focus. You can expect good hop flavor with every stone beer.
