COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality.

This basic saison is lacking the majority of what makes farmhouse beers delicious. While crisp and easy dry, this brew is lacking a distinct, top tier Belgian spiciness. While Stone has proven worthy as west coast hop heads and stout masters, this style is still a mystery.

Transfer from BA review on 5-3-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a two finger head of billowy white foam and tons of tiny carbonation bubbles that stream up through the brew. The head holds strong, very slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – A grassy and hay-like aroma mixed with a good yeast cake smell are the heaviest of the aromas. There is also a big spice smell of lemongrass, coriander and thyme as well as some hints of pepper. Some citrus and peach as well as a lots of funk mix within, creating a rather robust and very inviting saison aroma. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet fruity and crisp cracker malt with a bit of coriander and thyme and a light yeast flavor. The fruit is a mix of apricot and tangerine with these two flavors remaining relatively constant throughout most of the taste with them fading just a bit toward the very end. While the taste is rather smooth upfront, quickly some flavors of lemongrass and grain as well as some funk come to the tongue. The lemongrass grows stronger and is joined by some pepper and hay as the flavor advances to the end. A big dose of a herbal flavor comes to the tongue right at the end of the taste, mixing with the now big lemongrass and hay like/grassy flavors to leave a slightly overly spiced funky flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly higher side in terms of thickness and creaminess for a saison with a 6 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. The higher carbonation is great for all the funky and spice flavors of the brew, minimizing their potency to some extent but with the rather average to slightly thicker body the higher carbonation is sort of counteracted. Overall just OK. Overall – An alright saison, but overly spiced and rather unbalanced with too much herb and grass to really make it all that enjoyable.

Reviewed On: (5/24/14): *Glassware: Tulip *Serving: 12 oz *Aroma: lemon, lavender, grassy/floral, with some lemon zest/peel, yeasty *Appearance: Deep gold color with a finger of head that did not stay around. Left some light lace on glass as well. *Taste: Lemon upfront, overpowering lavender in the middle, and a spicy peppery/strong yeast at the end. *Palate: Light bodied, oily slick mouthfeel, fizzy carbonation on the tongue. Finishes clean and dry. *Overall: A poor example of the style by Stone. Stick to the IPAs/Stouts guys. I had the misfortune of buying a six pack of these. It was the first time I ever struggled to finish a pack of beer. It got to the point where I decided to give two of them to my friend, who enjoyed them more than I did. This does not go well on its own. Pairing it with food is a must. When paired with food, it is slightly better. Too much yeast and lavender. Pass on this one.

Yellow dull pour with fair one finger layer of white head. Very pleasant citrusy lemongrass and sage and white pepper spiciness. Not overly spicy. Almost creamy on the tongue. A bit of an acidic grapefruit rind bitterness on the finish. Pretty Solid saison, but not quite refreshing.

2014 release. Cloudy appearance. Head dissipates very quickly. Aroma is excellent, very Belgian. Distinct spice to the nose and to the first sip. Palate is thin. Taste is overly peppery.

On tap at craft. Clear gold. Aroma of lemon, thyme, old wooden drawer sweet funk, barnyard. Taste is sweet and softly tart. Deliciously crisp and quenching. Medium dry finish.

On tap at Craft Beer Market, pours a hazy pale golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is very spicy, with clove, cardamom, and black pepper. Flavour brings out lots of spices, Belgian yeast, apples, and banana. Not authentic at all, but rather very spicy, tangy and peppery. Good attempt for what it is. Decent.

Suttree (5186) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - OCT 1, 2014
On tap at Bearden Beer Market. Yellowish orange, with a white head. Smells citrus, with a hint of baby aspirin, as well as some herbal notes. Taste is citrusy at first, then some subtle herbal notes. Some woody, hoppy flavors, too. Hints of pepper as it warms. Odd but enjoyable beer. Seemed kind of like a pale ale/saison hybrid. I ended up drinking several.
