Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers is a thing of spicy glory, with the just-right heat of smoked jalapeños (aka chipotles) that combines beautifully with the beer’s peat-smoked malt and roasty character. The idea came about in 2006 when Merchandise Manager Chris Carroll suggested we make a special "South of the Border Stone Smoked Porter" for Cinco de Mayo that year. One sip, and we were hooked!

Shared 12 oz bottle with Sherm1016....thanks! Pours dark brown with thin tan head...fades quickly. The head fades quickly but the powerful taste does not. The peppers do not dominate but rather add to the flavor....but it is still hot! It is the PALATE where this beer shines....it definitely is a warm feeling on the tongue and roof of my mouth. Great in the right place and time...but not for that "right after mowing the lawn on a hot day" type of event.

Dark cola-colored beer with a thin fizzy tan head that disappears quickly. Rich nose of smoked peat, cocoa, and balsamic with a tingling sensation of pepper. Flavor is much more pronounced than the aroma. It starts with an explosion of dark-roast coffee, burnt nuts, and unsweetened cocoa which gives way to prominent smoke and finally a slight punch of heat, which blends into the finishing hops. Good beer with many layers of flavor.

Sampled at ESBLS. It poured a ruby color with a nice tan head. The aroma was of dark chocolate with some smokey malt. The taste was of roasted malts with a smokey finish that has a light, chipotle spice bite. Not overpowering, just about right.

Aroma: Wood smoke, rock candy, faint chili spice. Appearance: Deep dark cherry body, foamy tan head that fades with minimal lacing. Taste: Wood smoke, dark chocolate. The chipolte really comes out in the aftertaste - tingles in the throat. Palate: Light bodied for a porter. The chipolte spice seems to act in place of carbonation, with palpable bursts of heat throughout the mouth. Overall: My first go with a chili beer. Very interesting and well done. Profile shows restraint and balance.

Pours an almost cola brown, with a fluffy off white head, the chillies give a decent smoke and chilli heat hit. Very drinkable .

Bottle. Clear brown under a small, whipped tan head. Chocolate, earthy dried tomato, a whiff of pepper, leather aroma. A light, roasty porter layered heavy with pepper heat and cocoa. Leaves a hot peppery finish.

Sampled at ESBLS. Looks like a porter. A kind of odd aroma that I guess is the chipotle. The flavor brings that also and it is fairly robust. It is also not really great. I am not a fan of smoked beers and this is an example. There is some heat here. There is some meat and even some nuts. A good bit of hot spice. Not a favorite.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown body with a fizzy light brown head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is a nice mix of smoked malt, chocolate, and chili peppers. The flavor is pretty heavy on the peppers, much stronger than expected. The chocolate and smoked malt dominate up front, but the finish is all spicy peppers. The more you drink, the more the chipotle builds, getting quite hot and spicy by mid bottle. It’s tempered a bit by the chocolate malt, but the peppers are clearly the dominant flavor here. Light to medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice beer, not sure I would want a sixtel of this on tap at home, but a bomber suits just fine.

For us who like the spices this is great. Pour is rich and dark with a tan head. Aroma is sweet and spicy with malts and chocolate note. A perfict balance between beer and food.

Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is light chocolate roast, smoky, hint of spice, taste is sweet chocolate, light peat smoke, soft spice at first, lingering burn the further you get into the bottle, just a tad thin.
