4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Transfer from BA review on 1-11-14-
Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a slightly hazed, deep brown, almost black color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head fades rather fast leaving a decent level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is very sweet with tons of vanilla from the vanilla bean aging. Along with the sweet vanilla, are other sweet smells of chocolate and some light caramel. While overall sweet, there is a nice level of roasted and darker smells as well. Aromas of a roasted malt and a lighter level of smoke and char are all there, balancing out the sweeter smells quite nicely.
Taste – The taste begins with lots of the sweeter vanilla and chocolate flavors detected in the nose. Along with these, are some roasted malt flavors with hint of a light char and smoke mixed within. The vanilla fades ever so slightly with the smoke and char getting slightly stronger. Toward the end the chocolate fades a bit as well with some lighter hoppier flavors of a pine and earth nature taking their place. While the vanilla is slightly less at the end, it is still quite strong, and with an increase in roasted and smoke flavors ends up leaving a still rather sweet, but nicely smoked and roasted porter flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both the slightly thicker body and lower carbonation are fantastic for the roasted and darker flavors of the brew, while accentuating all that vanilla flavor and really allowing them to make a big presence on the tongue (which is sort of what they are going for with the vanilla bean aging.. at least that is what I think..).
Overall – Lots of nice vanilla flavors mixed with a good porter base and a bit of smoke. This was a quite enjoyable brew overall and in my opinion moderately superior to the none vanilla bean aged brew.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
"if you like the smell of vanilla, this beer has one of the best aromas you’ll ever find. the smoke is toned down a touch from the regular SP, and the vanilla smooths out the body very nicely without being as everpresent as it was in the aroma. great beer! Hmmm...in the bottle the aroma is toned down (just a touch) and the flavor is even better than i remember. same overall score. Great buy at <$3."

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Appearance was clear reddish brown with diminishing creamy beige 1/2 finger head, spotty lacing. Aromas are smoke, bacon, ash and hints of vanilla and chocolate. Taste are chocolate, vanilla upfront then smoke comes to play with some sweet porter malt backbone and ash. Palate was soft creamy CO2 with medium body, lasting smokey and sweet finish. One of the better Smoked Porters I’ve tried.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Trinity Brass Tap. Pours a very dark brown with a deep red hue along the edges. Near solid sheet of foam lacing along the glass. Aroma has tobacco, vanilla, and roasted malt notes. Flavor is slightly sweet up front with a nice amount of bitterness in the finish. Aftertaste reminds me of a vanilla flavor pipe or cigar tobacco.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from unknown place. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. Nice roasted malt and vanilla notes on the nose. I definitely get the vanilla on the finish though I’m not sure it works blended with the smoked porter base. Other times I get more of the smoky notes. It’s a miss for me but its a more interesting miss than most.

Tastes like Stone Smoked Porter, with a subtle Vanilla flavor. Pretty standard. The regular smoked porter never really stuck out to me, this is no exception. Not bad, didn’t blow my mind.
