3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A thick black body with a tan head that had good retention and lace. Aroma had a strong coffee malt profile initially. A good balance of sweet chocolate and smoke, and a nice presence of vanilla. Flavor had a nice bittersweet chocolate quality upfront, coffee malts were a bit restrained. Smoke and vanilla came through in the finish. Overall good balance of flavors nothing really overpowered any other flavor. Almost light mouth-feel. Nice beer.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours deep black with an off white head that quickly dissipated. Aroma is vanilla, coffee and a hint of smoke. Smells excellent! Taste is sweet with some bitterness in the background, the vanilla seems to really sweeten it. Medium bodied, thin texture, average to soft carbonation.

Dark and lovely color from bottle to glass. Nice head and aroma. Strong flavor of vanilla in a standard porter. Solid beer.

Growler shared with brenn79, thanks. Aroma consists of vanilla, chocolate, roastiness, bread. Smells like a Guinness with a little vanilla added. Whereís the smoke? Pours black with red highlights and a medium cream-colored head with good retention. Flavor is sweet and full of vanilla, very light smokiness, finishes with a hoppy bitterness, dry. A light smokiness finally comes through in aroma after sitting for twenty or so minutes. Iím also getting a licorice flavor. Carbonation is soft, donít know if thatís a growler fill issue or if that was how itís brewed. Iím a little underwhelmed, dammit. I was really looking forward to this. There should be a lot more smoke if you ask me.

Draft into a growler- Pours pitch black with a creamy one finger light tan head. Aroma is strong vanilla bean, roasted grains, chocolate. The taste is roasted malts, followed by vanilla and chocolate, very decadent and dessert in a glass. The finish is moderately dry and the hops are noticeable stopping it from being too sweet. One huge complaint, whereís the smoke?!!

Bottle. Pour is dark brown with a medium tan head that fades quickly. Aroma is faint - vanilla extract, cocoa, smoke. Flavor has a lot more smoke coming through with notes of bittersweet chocolate, peat, vanilla, and roasted grain. Thin body.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
$7 bomber poured into all that was clean, a shaker pint.
Appearance: Pours about a perfectly clear ruby black sort of color. Really puffy sand colored head that sticks around. Plenty of lacing.
Smell: Vanilla is obviously there. Coffee. A hint of chocolate. A bit of that smoke as well, though itís not as smokey as I thought it might be.
Taste: Mild, yet still packing some awesome flavor. Itís about exactly how I picture a porter as opposed to a stout -- a bit lighter on flavor with a less heavy body (this is about medium). Vanilla on the front, smokey roast on the middle, with a bit of a more pronounced coffee finish. Reasonably complex and extremely easy drinking. Smoke sort of flavor lingers afterwards. Slightly bitter aftertaste as a whole. The smoke isnít huge in this porter, but it definitely works very well with that vanilla flavor. Carbonation is slightly prickly, Iíd say itís moderately carbonated.
This beer just works for me. It has a nearly ideal look for the style, and the smell and taste, while muted (like I supposed they should be in a porter, in my eyes), is fantastic. The smoke and vanilla work with the roast characteristics in just about perfect harmony. A fabulous beer that I personally believe is getting the shaft with a "mere" 88 rating on this site.
Straight 4.25 rating with a 4.5 overall because itís a fabulous choice when Iím looking for a legitimate PORTER. Not one thatís labelled as such and is actually a stout.

Bottle from Ron. I love Stone and their beers always seem well made with a purpose. This one is a nice combo of vanilla, mostly vanilla, with a hint of smoke to balance the sweet. It works. The appearance is dark and clear with auburn highlights. Nose is chocolate, vanilla, roasted notes. The mouthfeel starts smooth and silky and ends a bit dry and hoppy, but in a subdued way. This is a very well put together beer.
