Pours a deep cola color with a slight smoked aroma. Taste is a slightly smoky flavor. The vanilla flavor cuts into the smokiness of the flavor. A minor bitter flavor after the swallow that quickly disappears. A warming beer that is nice.

[Bottle] Inky black pour with a small khaki colored head. Distinct vanilla aromas. Chocolate and roasted coffee in the flavor. Light smoke and earthy hops follow in the finish. Strong, yet balanced vanilla flavors. Great lacing. Smooth and silky mouthfeel. A solid brew. Tasting notes from 2/2014.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2014 So many times it seems that the vanilla can be too much in beers. We’ll, in this one, the vanilla certainly masks a good deal of the smoke in the aroma, the body has a nice balance between the two. Certainly feels like a winter only beer but that’s fine - winter comes every year. Strangely has a bit if a warm soda carbonation feel to it, which isn’t the best. Mostly pretty good though.

A thick black body with a tan head that had good retention and lace. Aroma had a strong coffee malt profile initially. A good balance of sweet chocolate and smoke, and a nice presence of vanilla. Flavor had a nice bittersweet chocolate quality upfront, coffee malts were a bit restrained. Smoke and vanilla came through in the finish. Overall good balance of flavors nothing really overpowered any other flavor. Almost light mouth-feel. Nice beer.

Pours deep black with an off white head that quickly dissipated. Aroma is vanilla, coffee and a hint of smoke. Smells excellent! Taste is sweet with some bitterness in the background, the vanilla seems to really sweeten it. Medium bodied, thin texture, average to soft carbonation.

Dark and lovely color from bottle to glass. Nice head and aroma. Strong flavor of vanilla in a standard porter. Solid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Growler shared with brenn79, thanks. Aroma consists of vanilla, chocolate, roastiness, bread. Smells like a Guinness with a little vanilla added. Where’s the smoke? Pours black with red highlights and a medium cream-colored head with good retention. Flavor is sweet and full of vanilla, very light smokiness, finishes with a hoppy bitterness, dry. A light smokiness finally comes through in aroma after sitting for twenty or so minutes. I’m also getting a licorice flavor. Carbonation is soft, don’t know if that’s a growler fill issue or if that was how it’s brewed. I’m a little underwhelmed, dammit. I was really looking forward to this. There should be a lot more smoke if you ask me.

Draft into a growler- Pours pitch black with a creamy one finger light tan head. Aroma is strong vanilla bean, roasted grains, chocolate. The taste is roasted malts, followed by vanilla and chocolate, very decadent and dessert in a glass. The finish is moderately dry and the hops are noticeable stopping it from being too sweet. One huge complaint, where’s the smoke?!!
