I bought this despite what I thought was a poor showing by chipotle version - nose has a lot of vanilla extract character and not much else - maybe a little smoke and/or char - medium body - the texture is fairly nice - creamy, with medium carbonation - flavor is simple - equal parts sweet vanilla and strong char, followed by a moderate bitterness, none of which comes together all that well - I like the chipotle better - sigh.

Bottle. I know we shared this at RBAG, and I know I have my unrated notes sitting at home on my bedside table waiting to be entered, but why would I pass up the opportunity to have this again while Iím actually on the hallowed ground from whence it was conceived? Dark brown, copper highlights, beige head, good retention, light lace. Aroma is roast, cocoa, and soft vanilla-- no real smoke on the nose. Maybe the vanilla masks it. The palate really mirrors the nose, with the roast dominating, and the vanilla providing a soft natural sweetness. Light smoke shines through here nicely. Iíve had a few vanilla beers lately that have rubbed me the wrong way with their extract quality. This beer is a great example of vanilla flavour that feels very natural, and is nicely integrated into a beer that offers balance and subtlety. Great job.

Bottle with Meg. Pours a nice blackish color with thick tan head and blanket lacing. Nose is smoked and roast malt, cocoa, and soy sauce. Some vanilla, moderate smoke. Finish is like sucking on a band aid that has been on the hand of a chain smoker for weeks.

Bottle from sloth! Nice pour....Light black in color that barely lets light through. Decent frosty head that faded quickly. I really like the aroma of vanilla beans. Light roasted malts with slight smokiness. Taste follows the nose. Slight vanilla bean, light smoke, light roasted malts. All blended well together. Tons of flavor for a 5.9 percenter. Body is on the thinner side. Not watery, just wish it had more backbone. Overall good smoked porter. Thanks bert!

Big chocolate, roast and smoke scents, almost like a chocolate brownie. Taste is a lot of vanilla flavors with some nice subtle smoke and chocolate, great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle thanks to timfoolery: Poured a brown black with a very thin edgy red tint, the head was beige but dissipated fast. Aroma is light smoke not as strong as other versions. Taste is very vanilla bean up front with a slight roasted smoke finish.

Aroma: Though this beer is described as "smoked" the vanilla isnít overwhelmed by the smoke aroma Appearance: black with minimal head. Taste: Moderate bitterness. Roasty coffee notes and less smokey and vanilla flavor than the aroma would indicate. Palate: Medium to low carbonation. Between medium and full bodied finishes dry. Overall: The combination of the roasty porter flavors and vanilla is one of my favorites. One of my favorite Stone beers definitely recommended if you can get a hold of it.

light vanilla aroma light smokey mainly nothing. Head disappeared. Taste is more bitter than smokey or vanilla. I really canít believe i shelled out 4 bucks for this. Probably the worst stone brew I ever had. Not horrible still if it was normal price I probably would not mind so much.

Did not care for this porter. Thin head with little carbonation. Vanilla flavor only detracted from my enjoyment of other flavors in their regular smoked porter. Will not purchase again.

This spin-off of Stoneís great Smoked Porter, dark brown, practically black in color, is definitely for those who prefer sweet beers. Although itís not a sugar or candy sweetness, the vanilla bean really brings out the inherent sweetness in the beer. Thereís one thing about this beer, though, that really impresses me, and thatís the fact that the vanilla tastes nothing like an extract. It truly tastes like real vanilla beans. For being able to pull this off, and so well, Iím high-fiving this beer. Unfortunately, it makes an already round beer much rounder, accentuating an already sweet and malty beer.
