2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Purchased both the smoked porter with vanilla bean and one with chipotle, as a comparison. Pours a creamy dark, rich head. Light smoky flavoring (wish it was more pronounced). Vanilla is fairly light. All together, not a very exciting beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours a dark brown with a moderately full, cream-colored, creamy head which is mostly lasting and leaves thick, scattered lace. The nose is pleasant quite vanilla bean dominant with only slight notes of roast and faint smoke as well. The flavor is similar with more roast and some dark chocolate, slight floral note?, vanilla bean still prominent, and slight smoke. The palate is moderate, less than lively, silky, and dry. The finish is still sweet with vanilla bean, light smoke, and roast lingering. Actually a pleasant beer to drink but so vanilla dominant in the nose to allow the rest of the beer to emerge. After trying both the vanilla and chipotle porters, I would much prefer the original.

12oz bottle poured into glass. Wow! This beer is awesome. Big aroma of vanilla beans and slight vanilla. The vanilla beans really come through in the flavor as well, smooth and creamy.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Casa DE Oro. Roasty nose with a good deal of spiciness. Rich smoked flavor with a bit of a spiced character. Full bodied and tasty.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle:   Seems black, large foamy light beige head, rather nice lacing.   Very faint roast, chocolate, and vanilla on the nose.   Has somewhat of an artificial flair.   Certainly vanilla on the tongue, but also some very pale roasted malts and cocoa.   If this is a Porter, it lacks hops or a decent roastiness.   If its a smoked Porter, its lacking even more.   When I think of Smoked Porter I think of Alaskan, in its robustness and flavor.   This one is much thinner, with an artificial vanilla presense.   Body and mouthfeel are simply moderate.   Lackluster finish, extremely pale roast, little to no smoke, and with a moderate vanilla flavor.   Must be better on cask because in the bottle its nothing to bother recommending or having again.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Looks like a porter in my glass. Sweet, borderline artificial vanilla on the aroma with light roast in the background; no smoke. Taste is dominated by the vanilla but there are some chocolate notes and some hop bitterness. There might be a very small amount of smoke nearly hidden in the finish but it’s hard to pick out. Light, too light in the mouth. Not a bad beer but the vanilla really seems to dumb the beer down for me. I much preferred the chipotle variant.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a fair amount of creamy beige head. Aroma is vanilla and burnt wood. Taste is off, there is too much bitterness in the front end which overpowers the vanilla. I had high hopes, but this is not very good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle poured into a Stone Brewing Co. pint glass.
Pours a dark brown with a one and a half finger off-white head. Not surprisingly roasted smoky malt and vanilla on the nose. The vanilla hits my tongue almost immediately and then is joined by a hint of dark espresso and roasted malt, all swirl together for a balanced finish that has just a bit of bitterness with the vanilla lingering immediately however the smoke outlasts the vanilla. Pleasantly medium-bodied, perfect level of carbonation, slick with a creamy edge. A nice variation of an excellent brew.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Vanilla is definitely present on the nose especially as it warms, but expected more on the flavor. Smoke, and especially the hops, blow out the vanilla, so it becomes a very subtle earthy nuance and not even particularly vanilla like. Okay, decent with a chocolate berry shortbread tart, but underwhelming.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz Bottle. Pours a thin dark brown color with a decent collar of foam. Aromas of smoke, roast and vanilla in the nose followed by a similar taste, but geared more heavily towards the vanilla. More chocolate and roast on the back end. Somewhat fluffy on the palate with a surprising smoothness. Some roasted bitterness balances out the vanilla bean sweetness. Overall a nice take on one of Stone’s originals.
