12oz bottle, drank on 8/28, reviewed from notes A: Dull black with a rush of carbonation. Good cream color head recedes into bubble bath. N: Coffee, charred smoke, Thereís ample chocolate and a nice blend of vanilla beans. The smoke is the most prominent feature, however, as one might expect, and it tends towards a tobacco/cigar flavor rather than a cold campfire. T: Chocolate and dry charred kindling. Tobacco and a minor amount of vanilla. Thereís a bitter pine suggestion here from the hops. Not nearly as good as the nose. M: Light and drinkable. Might have too little body, though. O: An interesting beer that might not be as good out of the bottle as it has been when Iíve tried it on draft. Not particularly complex, but decently done.

Poured a dark reddish brown with a dark tan head and good lacing. Nose; smoke, maple and wood come to me first, subtle hops and vanilla. Mouth; bitter wood, smokey maple with trailing hops, malts and subtle vanilla. Finish; interesting attempt, I think the smokeyness is there but the vanilla is light. Not my style of beer...but I think they accomplished what they were trying to. Try it once...at least.

Bottle. Nose is sweet, artificial-toned vanilla with light smoke and chocolate. Dark brown with no head. Flavor is sweet and over-the-top vanilla, then a touch of smoke in the finish. Out of balance. Medium body.

Bottle. Dark brown with a big cream head. Aroma is smoke, vanilla, cocoa, coffee. Taste is classic porter with the right amount of smoke and vanilla, perfect amount of sweetness. Finish is sweet with roasted bitterness. Medium body, lively carbonation. Solid.

From a 33cl bottle purchased at total wine in McLean Virginia. Cola colored with wispy head. Toasty nose. Strong vanilla flavor. Very subtle smoke. Mildly bitter aftertaste.

12 oz bottle poured into a tumbler pint glass. A: Pours a moderately dark ruby red color thatís almost translucent - itís easy to forget that this is one of the lighter porters on the market. The head is an impressively thick one finger light mocha color with solid retention. Nice webbed rings of lacing are left on the glass. S: Decently smoky, with a little maltiness (though not necessarily roasted) and fruit. The vanilla almost smells detached from the rest of the beer, almost like it was added seperately. Kind of weird, but not exactly bad. T: Okay, THEREíS the vanilla. The way it opens the beer, it really just steamrolls over the notes of light smoke, bittersweet chocolate, and darker fruits the base beer provides. Thereís a strange finishing acridness thatís kind of harsh and phenolic at times. In addition, the vanilla is kind of weird and unpleasantly artificial tasting, further hurting its balance. Iím just not feeling this at all, itís really imbalanced in general. On the plus side, it improves somewhat as I continue to finish it (a trend I seem to notice in smoked beers). M: Nothing too wrong here; it has a light texture and a wet finish, but the hints of plastic on the taste kind of makes the back of the tongue tingle unpleasantly. Itís easy enough to drink, I guess. Low carbonation. O: This beer is just one big "feh" from me. The vanilla isnít too well integrated, and it majorly detracts from an otherwise solidly good porter. The chipotle version seems to be far more up my alley; so Iíll have to try that one out. As for this one? Give it a miss.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown body with a nice frothy light brown head that had excellent retention. The nose is pretty nice, certainly more vanilla than smoke, with some nice chocolate malt character and some slight roast. The flavor is a little too overpowered by the vanilla and really doesnít allow the smoke to come out at all. It tastes a little unnatural. At least there isnít an over abundance of hops in this Stone beer. Thereís an eerie taste similarity to vanilla coke actually. Light to medium bodied with fizzy active carbonation. I really like the regular Smoked Porter, but this doesnít have a whole in common with it. Wouldnít buy this one again.
