2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft Collins Pub. Pours deep black with thin light tan head that leaves some lacing on the way down. Nose is roasty chocolate malt with a ton of vanilla. Not picking up any smoke notes, but the standard smoked porter from stone doesnít have much either so i guess I am not shocked. Body is a bit thin and carbonation is kind of sharp. Some mild chocolate roastiness up front and then just way over taken by vanilla. Not a good kind of vanilla, but like it has this abrasive and harsh extract vanilla taste. On paper this one sounded really good, but wasnít worth the trip.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAY 29, 2009 Draft at Collins Pub. Pours jet black with thin wisps of burnt tan foam on top. Weirdly dry nose of smoke, roast, and vanilla. Mouthfeel comes on like a lot of thick creamy goodness, and that works for a while. Smoke, chocolate, roast, and a hube wash of vanilla coat the mid palate, and thatís where things go south. Too much vanilla. It tastes like real vanilla, insomuch as it does not taste sugary like extract or fake stuff. What it does taste like, unfortunately, is aspartame. Itís quite acetic, slick, and odd. Disappointing.

Spot on--delicious dark brown-sugar malted porter with smokiness and vanilla, both in aroma and in flavor. Smokiness is not overpowering; the beer is very well balanced.

On tap at Collins. Dark inky black with little head. Aroma perfectly matches description. Loads of vanilla cream and smoke. Great balance and addition to the smoked porter line.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Had on tap at Stone Brewery.
Looked amazing in the glass, it actually looked like Smokey. You know, the main character from Friday. Yeah, it was about as dark as him.
Taste, is somewhere between shoe leather and an old ash tray. Not sure where they were trying to go with this one, but it doesnt work for me. I taste the smoke, I taste what might be vanilla in the after taste, but somethign about it is just foul.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
The first time I had this was on cask at the Stone 12th Anniversary festival, and it was all 5ís, in my opinion. This review is based on a growler I got at the brewery last Saturday.
Black with a two finger cappuccino colored head.
Smells like what I imagine burning vanilla beans to smell like. Sweet and smoky. Very appetizing.
To me, this tasted like it has more smoky overtones, with vanilla in the near background, rather than the other way around. All mixed in with that great dark porter taste.
Smooth and dry. There was something in there that kinda made me think of a "gritty" mouthfeel, if thatís possible in a liquid form.
A very drinkable beer. I could easily go through the whole growler myself.

a bunch of vanilla presence and it takes away from the whole impact of the beer for me in general and makes it really one note...sad

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2009 Quite simply the best thing I have ever had from Stone. On CASK no less at their Winter Storm 09. I was so lucky and knew it because all three kegs burned out by late lunch. Nose is an immaculate vanilla bean vanilla extract with a slight roasted foundation. It looks like there are small flecks of white in it because of the BRIGHT white head - like a photo negative of cookies ín cream. The normally tart (for me) porter is calmed a bit, so unified in roast and coffee and the vanilla just ends it like a chord, and fills your mouth and sinus with a wonderful vanilla cream haze, or aura, or patina. Such a great, great pairing.
