Pours a beautiful dark mahogany with a very healthy off-white head. Unfortunately the rest of the beer just doesn’t do it for me, which is so disappointing because I love Stone’s original Smoked Porter. The vanilla just does not blend well with the malts in terms of aroma and flavor. The addition of vanilla is more harsh than smooth and sweet, and just plain tastes bad. Perhaps it will be worth a revisit one day, as I can’t quite figure out what happened with what sounds like such a promising (and highly rated) beer.

pours reddish brown with a thick frothy head. aromas of vanilla and smoke very malty. initially sweet on the tongue followed by a medium bitterness which lasts for a bit on the palate. full-bodied and thick.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a thick smooth beige head. Aroma if vanilla and grains. Flavour is dark malts and a tiny hint if smoke. Body is just barely medium. Finish is slightly bitter and very malty and sticky.

Bottle, pours a very dark black brown with a tab head leaving moderate lacing. String notes of vanilla, chocolate, malt and the smokiness. Absolutely delicious, great porter light mouthfeel and easy to drink.

A good vanilla porter. Very sweet and light for a porter. Strong vanilla flavor.

Clear, dark brown, near black pour with a 2 finger, creamy beige head that fades to a thick skim then has excellent retention and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is toast, chocolate, nutty notes, nice sharp and smooth vanilla notes, toast, dark caramel, smoke and a hint of earthy wood. Flavor is smoke, roasted nuts and vanilla liqueur up front, then roast, a little char, earth, light Englishy fruity esters, bittersweet chocolate, light resinous hops and mineral notes to the finish. Palate is pretty light bodied, creamy to slightly watery on entry, medium strength, blanketing and sharp carbonation, dry minerally crisp and slightly chalky finish. Really good stuff overall, but dry and mineral are not great palate finishing descriptors for this flavor profile, I’m not saying I need some syrupy gloop for 10x the price, but a little more body and less carbonation would be nice. The flavor starts off great, but the carbonation and seemingly over heavy mineral content blow it away pretty quickly. Still, if this were available at a better price (it was a good price for a bomber, but still crappy $/oz. ratio), I would probably drink a ton of this.

Bottle. Pours brown with big off-white head, settles in minutes with minimal lace. Aroma is smoky, roasted, vanilla. Flavor is vanilla, with a smoky, roasted, chocolate finish. Vanilla is mildly bitter, raw and floral, can tell it is bean, not extract. Mildly bitter aftertaste. Soft carbonation, medium body, and smooth texture.

Nicely balanced smoke and vanilla play. No where near as dominating as I expect from stone. I really want sine aged cheddar with this.

beerbaaron (1278) - Arizona, USA - FEB 5, 2014
Pours a clear dark brown. Medium to large creamy beige head, lasting with lace.. Aroma is roast, lightly smoked, vanilla, chocolate. A little something that seems off..not sure, maybe it was the plane trip it took. Lighter Medium body. Somewhat creamy. Vanilla is right there up front, followed by roast, chocolate. Finish finds vanilla again, followed by a quite a bit of earthy, woody, smokey bitterness, with fair dryness. Not really into it..
