Commercial Description:
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Pours a dark brown, nearly black, with off-brown head. Aromas of roasted burnt malts, and chocolate. Flavors included roasted malt(little nutty), strong chocolate with some coffee, finishes with a sweet peaty oak that lingers.

22 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear dark red color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma is chocolate and very light smoke and roast. Taste is caramel, roasted malts, coffee, tea and very faint tobacco-ish smoky notes. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours a great thick black, tan head. The head is not huge, but definitely gets the job done. The flavors are great, the smokiness balances the sweet chocolate and the coffee is a nice back note. There are also of course some great malty flavors. Finish is very dry, overall balance is fantastic.

On tap @ McGraths. Pours a pitch black with a nicely lacing tan head. Smoky, roasted malt aroma, some hints of cola; a little boozy. Coffee, roasted malt, and marshmallow flavors; dry finish. Great.

Bottle. Black pour with a thick tan head. Aroma is roasted with some chocolate, rather nice. Flavor is more of the same, a nice chocolate base with that smoked presence coming through. Very good overall.

Mildly smoky aroma with hints of chocolate... Dark brown in color... Flavor is malty with hints of caramel, smoked malts, dark chocolate and hints of coffee on the palate... Not bad depiction, but I’ve brewed better.

On tap at Stone. Dark brown with brown highlights. Creamy tan head. Sweet chocolaty and bitter coffe nose. Taste is actually refreshing with even mixtures of malt, cocoa, coffee, and even hops. Palate is not overpowering. Like this beer.

Pours dark brown with a significant tan head. The head of the aroma is sweet, but deeper down there are hints of bitter chocolate and smoke (as one would expect). The flavor is creamy bitter chocolate and hops with a slight hint of smoke. The taste is not at all overpowering, and the beer feels very smooth in the mouth. My only real complaint about the flavor of this beer is that it may be a little sweet for my taste.
