DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 12, 2009 Great malty profile with hints of fruit toffee cocoa and java - comforting detailed aromas. Am drinking this warm so the sweetness will crisp up with cooling. The roast, smoke and hops are just a nice ’edge’ to balance the sweetness. Excellent! Loving Stone beers. italarican (157), Astoria, New York, USA Jun 10, 2009 Pours a deep mocha brown with a red tinge and thick, fizzy off-white head. Aroma of mocha and a bit of malt. I don’t really get a smoke taste anywhere, but there are some good hints of dark chocolate and roasted pistachio. Moderate body for a porter. A bit more alcohol finish as it warms. This is very good. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jun 7, 2009 Compared to others in it’s class (Smoke Jumper, Alaskan Smoked Porter, etc.), this one just doesn’t quite stand up. Still tasty...but more mild and easy on the palate. Dark mahogany pour with a fluffy latte head that left some lacing. A bit thin leaving the bottle and in the mouth. Chocolate, caramel, and a hint of smoke/pulled pork. Good, unfortunately not great. AndyReynolds (280), Wilder, Kentucky, USA Jun 5, 2009 Pours a rich, dark brown. Aroma is strong of smoke and dark malts. Notes of chocolate and caramel stand out as well. On the palate it is smooth and creamy. The taste is really stong in smoke. The finish is a bit dry leaving an after taste of sweet burnt malts and smoke. A little too much smoke for me, but still alright. I could not drink more than one in an evening. thekmoonlegend (93), Lynn, Massachusetts, USA Jun 2, 2009 I really enjoyed this beer. Very dark color, thick head that lingers as it should. Aroma of coffee, a hint of chocolate, lots of malts. A smoky flavor that was not too overpowering. Very good. gracefullypunk (272), Washington, USA May 31, 2009 Updated: Oct 17, 2009Much more of a subtle taste this time around, now that I am more used to smoked beers. More appealing, definitely. livelaughlovep (96), Lakewood, Ohio, USA May 28, 2009 Maybe I am spoiled by other brews, but this was pretty disheartening. No smoked flavor to be had, very thin body and thinner flavor. Malt/toast flavor, hint of alcohol warmth, and then, gone..... Bah! Perhaps it didn’t get a chance to fully warm, but I tried to give it a proper chance.
Sampled at Rozi’s Wine & Liquor, Stone Tasting Event, Lakewood, OH. Pipper (226), Ohio, USA May 28, 2009 Sample at Rozi’s Wine House at Stone Brewing Co. event. Red brown appearance, thinner pour than their Russian Imperial Stout (2006) with lighter tan head. First sip was almost nothing/water then a small hint of the smokey taste and at the finish a kick at the back of the throat. Not greatly impressive, I felt this was a pretty average porter.
