Opaque body with a full, tan head. Nice lacing as the head diminshes.
Chocolate and malt in the aroma.
Coffee and malt upon first tasting. Some slight hop bite in the finish. Smoke is very subtle, blending well with the coffee.

Bottle. Black color with a quickly diminishing brown head. Chocolate and dark roast dominate the flavor with a nice touch of smoke to create character.

This is my least favorite from Stone, which is, I donít know, praising with faint damnation? The smoke is there, in the background. Typical Stone brew, well made and pleasently hoppy.

Deep Black Color, medium head. Aroma is smoky and malty. Roasted malt flavor, slightly sweet, chocolate and coffee, slightly smoky. Hops balance the roasted malts well. This is a nice porter, yet the slight touch of smoky adds an extra touch of flavor. Taste is very smooth. The smokiness is subdued and may not please a lot of drinkers. All in all a very nicely done beer. Subtly sometimes works better than a sledgehammer. Stone beers are usually over the top, this one is subtle. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. Etched/painted beer bottle.

Dark bittersweet aroma, couldnít detect smoke. Coffee bitterness, something sweet but not chocolate. Bit of alcohol and earthiness. Really black beer with brownish head - initially foamy then subsided to a thin veil. Med-hi carb and med-heavy silkiness on the tongue. Canít taste any smoke either, though my wife thought she could. Pleasant tart/tangy bitterness and hints of sweetness. Really nice taste but hard to nail down elements other than bitter roasty malts. One of the best porters Iíve tried, though Fullers is a little better. Still donít understand why itís considered a Rauchbier.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2004 No smokey nose, but malty and chocolate-y. Black body with a little layer. Very light smoke and tabacco taste. Long lasting though.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2004 Reserved smokiness for a smoked beer - almost nothing in the nose or flavor profile. That's probably a strength of this porter, though. The roasted, burnt malt taste is enjoyable and accessible. Thin-medium body and very smooth.

Pours a rich dark brown with a nice lasting medium brown head. Aroma and taste of roasted chocolate malts and coffee, with subtle hints of smokiness. Mouthfeel was on the thin side as other have noted, but still a solid easy drinking porter

Lovely thick pouring, with a very small thinnish but lasting head and good lacing. Nose is berries, smoke, and caramel, a delicious combination but a little on the weak side. Flavor and mouthfeel do not blow me away, oily as ARMed mentions, rather viscous, very low carbonation -- kinda seems to ístickí going down, not so hot -- and the flavor is just not all that distinctive or interesting, mostly roasted grain, slight raisiny notes, and a very slight smokiness. Hey, donít call it ísmokedí unless the average joe can say, mmm, bacon. Does get a little sweeter, a little smokier, as it gets near room temp. Donít drink cold!
