COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

pours out dark with a tan head. smells of chocolate coffee and a hint of a smokey flavor. very thick mouthfeel and very easy going down. you can really taste the smoked malts over peat in this. being a scotch drinker, this has a small flavor similar to a weak scotch. this is a wonderful porter. my first try of the smoked class.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2006 This is one of my favorite porters. Jet black, with a tan head. Aroma of roasted nuts and cocoa, with just a little smokiness creeping in. A very smooth beer. Malty at first, with a nice dry finish. Don’t let the "Smoked" in the name scare you off - the smokey flavor is mild and very well blended. An outstanding beer!

I'm very impressed with this beer. Usually, I don't like porters, but this one is very good. Aroma is alittle smokey with hints of roastiness and chocolate. Maybe alittle nutty. Head is offwhite, and retains very nicely. Pretty much black opaque appearence with just a tint of brown. Flavor is sweet and malty up front then fades to a nice subtle hop and chalky finish. Smokiness is subtle and contributes to the dry finish. Very drinkable. Highly recommended

High quality in the design and balance of this porter, a tinge of smoke to accompany the malts, just enough hops in the finish. Not a big porter fan but this one stands out.

Dark brown in colour with a nice beige head. Nose is malty, a bit smokey, with a touch of anise. Well balanced malts and very slight smokey flavour. A very mild beer for Stone, but quite tasty.

Damn good. Dark dark with thin tan head. The nose is very malty and lots of sharp hops. The taste is hoppy but first there is a kick of sharp hops. Very good, and I was surprised how easily drinkable this was.

Wow. Tasted this along with Arrogant Bastard, Ruination IPA, and Imperial Stout, and finished off with 3Floyds Dark Lord. This was right in there with the best. Pours black with a deep tan frothy head. The aroma was inviting, full of chocolate and coffee malt with an ever so subtle smokiness. The flavor was fantastic, carrying the coffee and chocolate and the subtle smoke to make for a great drink. Beautiful.

Very dark brown body with a short-lived off-white head. Aroma has smoked apple, molasses, and bubblegun sweetness. The flavor features ritz crackers, apples/plum, and charcoal. Dry finish. I normally don't like smoked beers and this one isn't much different. The smokiness isn't terrible strong or offensive, but it contributes towards a strong dryness that isn't refreshing or enjoyable. I appreciate the quality of the beer and the new flavors (for me) but the fact that it's smoked still doesn't jive with me.

Small creamy off white head that lasts and a dark brown/red body. Aroma at first smelled like a smoked barleywine. Kind of an a smoked apple thing. Tastes pretty good... I didn't find a lot of smoked flavor (maybe I'm just immune to it), but did think the finish had a smoked hops/bitterness to it. Overall had a roasted maltiness, with some burnt apple. Body/mouthfeel was ok, but could have been thicker. I liked it!

This is one of my all time favorite porters. It is hard to find, but worth the price. I love the smoked malt flavor...not as pronounced as a rauchbier, but present nonetheless. This beer is so thick and malty that it reminds me of a stout. Great with a cigar and chocolate.
