A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

A nifty beer. Although light doesn't seem to penetrate much, it doesn't have the molasses-like clinging consistency of similarly dark beers. The head, beige in nature slowly but surely faded to virtual nothingness. The aroma was fascinating, spruce, chocolate, and a bit of smoke and Ajax powder. The flavor initially smacked of spruce, with a touch of a gum flavor from my childhood called pepsin. As it warmed, the spruce faded, the bitter chocolate came forward a bit, and the smoke served a nice complimentary, but not at all dominating role. Interesting, and remarkably refreshing in nature. Perhaps not the first beer I would always reach for, but very, very well made. Hats off to Greg Koch et al.

Pours with a black body topped by a thick tan lasting head with a good amount of lacing. Smokey(barbeque0 malt aroma with a touch of sweetness. Slightly sweet malty flavor with smokey notes and a touch of bitterness. The finish is slightly bitter and smokey with chocolate notes. Full bodied and smooth.

This is the only Stone beer I didn't like. I don't like the combination of smoked and bitter.

Malty & roasty aroma - nice warming malt base with some smokiness throughout - like hickory. Nicely balanced though - not like some smoked beers that taste like you just sucked on an ashtray.

Perfect Porter appearance - from the ruby tinges to the thin lasting tiny bubbled head. Great smoked balance, fairly hoppy. Just delicious.

A deep brown/mahogony. Nice light tan head that diminishes. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, hint of smoke, touch of chocolate and maybe some hops. Medium bodied, smooth, almost creamy wih wonderful roasted, sweet malt flavors that blanket the evident but not obvious smoke character. Hints of coffee bitterness throughout, not much in the way of chocolate overtones but no matter, this is fantastic. The body is most impressive for a porter and the smoke used provides memorable character.

Reddish hue, not as fully black as I would have anticipated. Effervescent but not overwhelming smoke, mild and balanced. Creamy palate. Very nice. (on tap, Pennsylvania Microbrewers Fest 2003)

I know a lot of hardcore Stone fans think this is a bit weak; it's subtle that's all! Choc, toffee, coffee aroma. Smoky choc, berry alcohol, nutty, caramel, fudge flavours. It's subtle, complex and eminently drinkable. I didn't expect this from Stone, nice work.

Can I just say "yum" and leave it at that? Okay, here's more. Deepest darkest red-brown color barely translucent when held up to (intense) light. It pours with a large light brown rocky head, which diminishes slowly and leaves good lacing patterns. The aroma is smokey, peaty and inviting. Tastes better than it smells - particularly after warming a bit. Rich, smokey toasted malt, coffee, molasses and enough hops to balance the sweetness. The rich creamy mouth feel is a delight and makes me glad that I have a 22 oz. bomber to keep me company tonight...
