I did not like this one at all. To thick and too bitter for my taste buds.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
pours black with a tan head that disipates somewhat but then hangs on very thinly. this is a very powerful porter and the smoke flavor just adds to that power. an excelent offering from stone

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nice big roasted aroma. Roasted grains come through in body with just a hint of smoked malt. Finishes dry. More of a light stout than a porter, which is fine with me since I am not a big porter fan.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 27, 2003 Sort of roasty and full of chocolate/coffee malt. Pretty bitter. Not all that smoky, really, despite the name. My favorite Stone beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
has chocolate and coffee notes on top of a rich malt base.
the smoke is noticable at the back of the tongue in the aftertaste. - subtle stuff , a credit to the brewer.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2003 Excellent. Nice smokey flavor after it warms up with a bit of sweetness, and crisper than I had expected.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Outstanding. Opaque dark showing a little brown at the edge. Extra large rocky tan head. Rich bitter chocolate, roasted malt, and smoke aromas and flavors. The bitter chocolate is most apparent but all 3 flavors are well-balanced. Nice bittersweet finish. Smooooth.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Itís a cross between the smell of your clothes the morning after you stayed up late staring into the campfire and stale cigarette smoke. Thatís the dominate aspect of the character, or at least the middle anyway. The beginning is more a good porter, warm and malty without crossing into stout territory. The ending is bitter hops with the lingering stale smoke. Actually, given the almost pitch black color and tan head of this beer, Iím surprised the malt doesnít play a stronger role in the flavor of this beer. This would be excellent with grilled pork or some of the smokier barbeque Iíve had.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: JAN 13, 2013 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of smoke/ashes and vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Rated in the same session as the Vanilla and Chipotle versions. Simple, ordinary nose with almost no smoke character. Overly bitter/stark in the mouth, and a bit dirty tasting too. Overall a pretty average beer.
