3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 2, 2004 Reserved smokiness for a smoked beer - almost nothing in the nose or flavor profile. That's probably a strength of this porter, though. The roasted, burnt malt taste is enjoyable and accessible. Thin-medium body and very smooth.

Pours a rich dark brown with a nice lasting medium brown head. Aroma and taste of roasted chocolate malts and coffee, with subtle hints of smokiness. Mouthfeel was on the thin side as other have noted, but still a solid easy drinking porter

Lovely thick pouring, with a very small thinnish but lasting head and good lacing. Nose is berries, smoke, and caramel, a delicious combination but a little on the weak side. Flavor and mouthfeel do not blow me away, oily as ARMed mentions, rather viscous, very low carbonation -- kinda seems to ’stick’ going down, not so hot -- and the flavor is just not all that distinctive or interesting, mostly roasted grain, slight raisiny notes, and a very slight smokiness. Hey, don’t call it ’smoked’ unless the average joe can say, mmm, bacon. Does get a little sweeter, a little smokier, as it gets near room temp. Don’t drink cold!

This beer was very thick and oily. Highly viscous. Slightly tart, tangy and sour. Bitterness abounds. Not as good as I was hoping.

Beautiful dark beer with a brown chocolaty lace. A malty slightly smoked aroma that is very good. Slightly bitter chocolaty malts with toffee and smoked flavor. Slightly sour palate. Good, but doesnt even aproach great.

Did not live up to the expectations. thought the lack of chocolate and roasted malt replaced by the taste of smoked malt sucked. nothing worth trying ever again. Go for a taddy porter/ much much better.

Had this in a bottle. Nose of roasted malt, maple syrup, cheese, spruce, brown sugar, and
band aids. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. The rocky brown head is mostly
diminishing with fair lacing. The brew starts flowery with a sweet middle and moderate
acidity. The long and strong finish is smoked espresso. This brew is very rich with deep
character. The full body is chewy and soft and finishes very astringent. Reminds me of
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Deep mahogany hue. Roasted aroma, licorice, chocolate. Sticky tan head. Sweet malt backbone, smoke undertones, very nicely balanced. Chocolate, coffee, velvety smooth. Perfect bitter ending, dry and clean. Very nice.

I was very impressed by the balance between smoke and with sweet malt, which is probably the best thing to balance the smoked quality with. Cool, all I got was a one dimensional smokiness, but let it warm and let the sweetness catch up. Really good porter.

A slightly smoked porter that could stand up to a session. Aroma is of raosted malts and a slight smokiness, esters, and alcohol. A very dark porter with a stable head. The smokiness really comes through in the flavor. One of the lightest smoked porters I have had. Really nice.
