Thick and Black. . . A large off white white bubbly head sounds like rice krispies. A pleasant smoky aroma, contains small amounts of bacon and ham, but more roasted oats and malt than other smoked beers I have had, though light in alcohol content, a small amount of sweet alcohol is also present in the aroma. Creamy mouth feel, definitely a good amount of smoke on the palate, but wonderfully balanced by chocolate, roasted malts and even a touch of hops in the finish. Wonderfully done Smoke.

This one poured a glacial black with noticeable lively carbonation and the most beautiful creamy tannish orange head i have just about ever seen and tasted across my palate and my lips. The aroma danced coffee and roasty smokiness and malt. Almost hints of an aged quality to the gargantuan beast. The taste cries of coffee, espresso, a thin chocolateness, and oh that smokey quality. A bit thin in retrospect given the smokeyness, but still unbelievable. That creamy head provides a break between the smokey carbonation and the bittering hop ending. A subtlely wet ending for a smoked porter. Very delectable, now if only one could find the perfect women to go with a damn good beer we'd be set.

I will preface this with the fact that I am not a fan of smoke flavor in anything. So, I am trying to rate it without my own personal bias. It was very dark black with a really light tan head. Low carbonation that is usually associated with this style. Smoked aroma with coffee and roasted malts. The smoke aroma was not artificial like it is with some other smoked beers. The roasted malts really come through and the smoke is subtle yet very present. Some bitter chocolate flavor are also present.

Pour is a dark, ruby-tinged brown. Thick, rocky tan head, medium diminishing, and leaving excellent lace. Aroma is roasted malt, hints of some fruits, and light smoke. Flavor starts quite sweet, middle gets more of the bitter roasted flavor, and ends with some light smoke and bitter chocolate. The hops show up a bit in the end as well.

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2003 RE-Rate (6/10/2003) Ruby hued, very dark rich body. Big frothy tan head, rolling and lumpy. PLenty of chocolate in the nose, lots of milk chocolate with a finishing note of smoke. Some dark cocoa as well, lots on the finish in fact. Coffee notes come through stronger near the end, espresso and dark roast. THe mouthfeel is a bit watery, and smooth. The smoke is in harmony with the rich, deep flavors. Good stuff

Fantastic beige head on an extremely dark brown beer. Great head retention and lace on glass. Roast barley nose backed up by hints of smoked malts, but not overpowering. Toffee/caramel and very, very slight fruitiness in the back ground along with some hops that become more prevalent as beer warms(cascade?). Lightly roasty/coffee flavor and smokiness are very appealing to me, toffee mid palate and finishes dry, but not astringent. Only drawback I can find is a little over carbonation which is a little prickly on the tongue and there is a slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste, although very subdued from other Stone offerings. Overall, this is a fantastic beer. The smoked peat is in the background the entire time and doesn't overpower like some traditional rauchbiers like Schlenkerla or Kaiserdom. Just my personal preference.

One of the best porters I've tried. Predominant flavors were a nice subtle smoke and assertive coffee bitterness. Tasteful use of hops and a creamy finish make this beer a delight to drink. Better than the 6th anniversary porter, IMO.

The lingering flavor made this one for me. Instead of using repetitive adjectives, I'm just going to say that Greg did an impeccable job of describing the beer and I'm not going to belabor the point. I did enjoy how the smoked taste lingered. Damn fine palate.

A dark, dark brown body with a full, dark brown head. The aroma is wonderful, subtle hop character, chocolate, coffee and a touch of smoke. The flavors are also quite good with the smoke being a bit more pronounced. I love how this does not taste like a campfire or a pig roast. Plenty of chocolate and a bit of toast. A most pleasant and drinkable beer. The best smoked beer I've had. It's not too unlike the New Holland Olde Poet/The Poet.
