A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Outstanding. Opaque dark showing a little brown at the edge. Extra large rocky tan head. Rich bitter chocolate, roasted malt, and smoke aromas and flavors. The bitter chocolate is most apparent but all 3 flavors are well-balanced. Nice bittersweet finish. Smooooth.

Itís a cross between the smell of your clothes the morning after you stayed up late staring into the campfire and stale cigarette smoke. Thatís the dominate aspect of the character, or at least the middle anyway. The beginning is more a good porter, warm and malty without crossing into stout territory. The ending is bitter hops with the lingering stale smoke. Actually, given the almost pitch black color and tan head of this beer, Iím surprised the malt doesnít play a stronger role in the flavor of this beer. This would be excellent with grilled pork or some of the smokier barbeque Iíve had.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2013 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of smoke/ashes and vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Rated in the same session as the Vanilla and Chipotle versions. Simple, ordinary nose with almost no smoke character. Overly bitter/stark in the mouth, and a bit dirty tasting too. Overall a pretty average beer.

The beer has a nice dark color to it when you pour, plus a nicely colored head to accent it. The smell is rather interesting, since I usually donít drink smokey beers. It is lighter than other porters. The taste is good and interesting do to the smoky aspect of it. Worth a try.

Excellent porter....black as night, beige head. Aroma of smoking wood chips. I didnt get much chocolate in the flabor...lots of coffee and more smoke though....a bit more crisp than I would have liked, but an all around kickass porter.

Definitely a nice porter. Had a tough time pouring it because the head was so thick

I hadnít heard of this before trying it in Stoneís tasting room, and of all their brews, I like it second only to their Russian Imperial. Iím a bit surprised itís not rated higher. Very dark color, nice tan head. Smoky coffe smell, and the same impressively smooth-but-not-overpowering feel and flavor that you get out of the R.I.S. Very nice mouthfeel, too. The guy behind the bar in Stoneís tasting room told me that he sometimes has this and chocolate doughnuts for breakfast. Now THATís a breakfast of champions!

Really dark brown. Hints of licorice and smoke in the aroma. Medium bodied, somewhat roasty, slightly malt sweet with bitter finish. Only a hint ofg smoke, I would have expected this beer to be more aggresive, but it is rather well balanced.
