doboy (175), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Sep 25, 2008 At a tasting at Priscillas in Morehead City, NC. All I needed was a good cigar and my rocking chair! A dark pour with a great head that leads to an off white lacing. Aroma was smoky, could have been stronger. Taste offered smoke, chocolate and some coffee. Mouthfeel was wonderful. Can’t wait to drink the whole bottle by myself! Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Sep 25, 2008 Pours dark black with a nice, foamy brown head. Beautiful, steady, permanent lacing that lingers down the glass. Great looking beer in the glass. Smells of weak malts -- no smokiness, no chocolate, nothing else. Very disappointing aroma. Flavor is lots of chocolate, ironically not very smokey at all. Digging deeper there is some dark fruit there. There’s a bit of a watery character to the beer as well. Unusually weak brew from Stone. Other reviews on this site rave, but I didn’t come away with a great experience from this beer. CelticBrew (676), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Sep 24, 2008 Poured dark brown, close to black from bomber. Formed nice size off white foamy head, aroma of roasted malts, smokey chocolate cocoa beans and some coffee tones. Flavour much of the same, even a bit of hop type character under smoke taste. Not my fave style, but had to try it at Priscillas beer tasting in MHC. Thanks Matt and Ed. kidmartinek (972), austin, Texas, USA Sep 21, 2008 Bomber:
Pours brownish black with a tan head that lasts long enough to... blow your mind. Aroma of fall, light malt, leaves, sugar, mist, burning wood. Flavor is full and light. How do they do that. It tastes like smoke, malt, honey, sugar, cocoa, and goodness. Context is pure, clean, and smooth, lightly thick, and just the right amount of bite. This beer is better than the last 30 you’ve had.
On Draught:
Pours dark brown, almost black, with a 1/2" off-white head. Aroma is of wood, malt, and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is malty, with a little bit of bland cocoa. There is definitely the smoked wood taste present. Texture starts out lightly cremay then goes watery, like most porters. Lacing is intricate and frequent. Mouth feel has a distinctive bite that is on the borderline of good and too much bite. The pint has a gummy, slightly dry finish and a quick taste of coffee follwed by diluted sugar cream water milk flavor. No I am not there yet, that’s just exactly what it tastes like. The bottles version is slightly better than the draught version because out of the bottle, the beer is creamier and less harsh. The bottled version is markedly better than the draught version because out of the bottle, it is creamier and less harsh. Rating reflects draught version. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Sep 21, 2008 bottle thanks to tizzlejizzle. black pour with a thin cream head. slight smokey scent with hints of roasted malts. nice roasted flavor with a smooth smokey backbone. KimJohansen (6676), Copenhagen V, Denmark Sep 19, 2008 Dark brown with medium beige head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, coffe and smoke notes. Flavour likewise with a peat finish. beergod (97), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 18, 2008 Stone Smoked Porter pours a very dark blk/brn with a tan colored head. Nose is of smokey roasted cuffee beans. Think a french roast. Taste is nice smokey malt like that of a non-acidic coffee! full bodied and the smoked flavor is definetly present. This beer would be great in chilli,or a stew. or on a nice cold night! dyetube (397), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 14, 2008 This beer pours deep ruby almost black with a medium tan head.
