Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 7, 2008 22 ounce bottle from kegbear. Thanks.
Pours almost black with a small frothy head. Aroma isn’t too strong, a bit of dark chocolate and smoke. The taste is much lighter than I have come to expect from smoked beers. Thinner than I had thought but still very tasty. Would buy again and would love to have with a meal. It seems like it would go with a heavy feast. Lovely 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 7, 2008 Pours near black with a huge fine creamy tan froth that has popping bubbles on the very top. Light aroma of dark malt, peat, creamy chocolate, and smoked wood. First taste is of dark chocolates, followed by peat smoked malt and coffee bitterness. The flavors aren’t extremely assertive, but they meld together extraordinarily well. The smoke is pretty faint, more of a scotch ale peat flavor. This is a dead-ringer for my buddy’s home-brew smoked porter... he’s a very good brewer =) . Lingering licorice aftertaste, some residual sugars. Softly carbonated medium/full body. Very easy drinking, the carbonation is so soft. Full agreement that the smoke is an "element" rather than the full character of the beer. 12many (231), Ohio, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle. Very dark brown pour with a small tan head. Seems a little thin and the head only leaves some small spotted lacing. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and a bit of smokey malt. Flavor is better than what I was expecting. Mild sweetness and the smokiness is more apparent while sipping. Palate is a little thin but silky and with a decent short aftertaste. Pretty solid. Plenty of flavor but not overpowering making this some what of a session porter. Praetorian (86), Los Angeles, California, USA Aug 5, 2008 dark brown in color, medium-large head, smells of coffee and molasses. tastes slightly sweet at first but finishes bitter. m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Aug 4, 2008 Pours with a light brown moderately sized head. The body hue is dark brown with a hint of amber if you look at it from afar. The aroma is very smokey (hence the name) with a hint of coffee and molasses.
It feels medium to the palate with light carbonation. The beer has a moderately sweet beginning to a bitter finish. stchloe (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 4, 2008 Although I desperately want to try the vanilla and aged brews, this porter, my oh my. Not quite the bitterness of other stone ales, but for once the smoky quality adds to porter. afireinside96 (817), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 3, 2008 22oz bottle served in an English pint glass. Medium brown pour topped by beige foam. Smells mainly of bitter chocolate, very little smoke detected. It is present in the flavor however, seamlessly blending with a nice dark chocolate, earthy flavor. Very nice. eburrell (7), Spring Valley, California, USA does not count Aug 2, 2008 Amazing beyond belief. Smoky chocolaty and just a well done coffee like appearance.
I actually use this in a chicken marinade.
Cheers to this one
