4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 SSKD814 (854) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 21, 2010
Split a 22 oz. bottle of this with my dad-we both liked it.
A- Deep brown body with thick, smooth and creamy dark tan head. Head has good retention and leaves behind plenty of lacing in the glass. Vibrant-bright red tone can be seen throughout the body when held up to the light.
S- Lots of chocolate malt, toffee, and some vanilla. Nothing overpowering and a nice balance between them.
T- Robust chocolate malt upfront with lots of toffee and hop flavor in the background. Lots of vanilla comes out for the finish along with plenty of chocolate malt and some bitter coffee taste. Both chocolate malt and a subtle vanilla sweetness linger.
P- Medium to low carbonation and medium weight body. Smooth and creamy. Near perfect for a porter.
O- This stuff is good. Probably my favorite porter. Has the big robust taste of a stout but the smooth drinkability of a porter. One I will definitely have again. Nice job by Stone.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2010 Smokey malt aroma, pours a bit on the light side. Nice bitterness backed by full body, full of smoky roasted, even burnt malt which contributes a bitterness itself. The smokeness in the finish is a bit overpowering and subtracts from what otherwise is a great beer.

Pours extremely dark brown to black in color with a fairly large tan colored head. Carbonation bubbles are very close knit and small and the lacing is above average. Smell is of dark roasted malts, chocolate, and a little tad of smoke. The taste is very smooth and textured filled consisting of dark chocolate, smoke, and a tad of bitter hops. with only slight hints of alcohol. A very drinkable smoked porter.

Tap. Pour is dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, light coffee ,and only a hint of smoke. Not really too much smoke. Flavor is also loaded with roasted malt and hints of coffee, smoke, and dark chocolate. Pretty thin body.

On tap at Brixie’s in Brookfield, IL. and dispensed a dark, black/brown, with average, light tan foam to the head, and clingy, curtainy lacing. The aroma was roasty malt, some grain, and pleasant hints of vanilla, cocoa, smoke, and wood. The flavor added to these, moderate bitterness, medium+ body, along with a creamy mouthfeel. Very nice!

Bottle at home. Pours a rich dark brown with a thick gorgeous tan head. Smells of smoke, malt, wheat, and chocolate with subtle hints of vanilla and coffee. The flavor is rich and mellow with only slight hints of alcohol. A good drinkable porter with a thick body and rich mouthfeel. I love it.

Poured from the 22oz bottle a clean deep brown color with a dense, tan, creamy head. Aroma has a good amount of chocolate, nice roasted barley note follows, a very light smoked peat presence and finishes with lots of roasted notes. Flavor has a very early roasted barley kick followed by a solid amount of sweet chocolate malt and then a light smokey, lightly burned and deep roasted malt flavor hits at the very end. Burping brings up some mild leafy hops bitterness. Body has a very nice heaviness, low carbonation and some modest amount of lacing on the glass. Overall a very tasty brew and one that I think I will be stocking quite often. Smoke flavor is there but not overpowering and the overall heavy roasted character really works well for the style.

Bomber from Whole Foods. My first Illinois Stone purchase. Coffee, chocolate aroma, deep brown, nice toffee head. Roasted coffee flavour, with some chocolate and liquorice too. Almost a full bodied, bitter and bold. Terrific just wanted it thicker body, and I didnt get any smoke? But thats o.k.
