bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Jul 17, 2008 From bottle in snifter. Pillowing and colored head quickly recedes towards the black liquid leaving intermediate lacing. Yeast aroma pervades with little else. Smokey flavor with a little metallic note. Smooth chocolate flavors throughout, sweet. Subtle complexity, good porter. dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep dark amber-brown with a small creamy head. Big malty aroma, a bit sweet, with some smoke. Taste is more bitter, with smoke and meat, malt, and a hint of an alcohol bite. Great lingering malty bitterness. Very tasty porter. TheEpeeist (1430), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 16, 2008 22 oz bottle. Clear dark brown with some frothy tan haze. Nose is earthy grape and brown sugar with a faint sweet smokiness. Medium light with crisp carb; gets fuller with the finish. Taste is cocoa, coffee, greens and smoke. Solid but not very smoky. joeymacaroni (181), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 15, 2008 22 oz. bomber served in an english pint. awesome beer. nose of ruby port and licorice. taste is heavy chocolate malt. not as smoky as i thought it would be. long, bitter finish. tasty and smooth, went down easy. highly recommended. Petrucci914 (574), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jul 14, 2008 Pours a ruby brown color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, fruity, caramel malts, chocolate, and smoked oak. Taste is not as rich as I would have expected. Chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts, with a hoppy and bitter finish. Good, but a bit thin and hoppy for such a style. jeckenroth (81), Charlestown, Massachusetts, USA Jul 6, 2008
Long lasting brown head tops an dark brown (almost black) opaque beer.
The first smells are of hops and malt. The hops are a little more than I would expect for this style, but exactly what I have come to expect from Stone.
The overwhelming taste here is of malt and a hint of chocolate. The smoke joins in about half way through and is just right not over powering in the least.
Very smooth on the tongue, oily and full bodied.
I tried this one with a danish blue cheese which is an excellent contrast. The porter wipes the pallet clean after each taste and makes the sharpness of the cheese even more pronounced.
Great representation of the style. badbeer (432), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Pours out a dark brown color with a light tan head, leaving pretty good retention and some lacing. Aroma is roasted with a little bit of chocolate, some caramel too. Some caramel in the taste, I definately get roastiness but the smokiness is very subdued. Medium bodied with fairly high carbonation. Pretty easy to drink beer, I’d probably have it again, but wouldn’t seek it out. enginaaron (73), San Diego, California, USA Jul 5, 2008 I have to say that I think this beer is one of the easiest-to-drink beers I’ve ever had. Mild but noticable tones of smoke, chocolate, and vanilla with a fine creamy texture. A lovely smooth texture. The more I have this beer the more I love it!
