fidel (886), Livermore, California, USA May 25, 2008 Updated: Jan 2, 2009Dark brown, roasted malts, coffee with a sweet smokee finish, and a slight dry hoppy bite. zeke626 (301), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 25, 2008 22 oz. bottle, pours an opaque, dark brown body with light brown head. Aroma of toasted and chocolate malts and brown sugar with hints of coffee and smoke. Flavor is the same as the aroma, with the smoke flavor coming through in the mid and back of the palate. Well-balanced and medium bodied; smooth mouthfeel. Dry, toasted malt and smoke finish. akevitt (97), Valhalla, Minnesota, USA May 25, 2008 Thanks to zeke626 for sharing this bottle. The beer was near opaque dark brown with thin tan foam. In the flavor there was semi-sweet candy malt and more subtle coffee. No smoke. In the flavor there was sweet candy malt, burnt malt, coffee. There was a faint smokiness on the mid-palate and on the finish which was rather bitter.
Bungalo22 (326), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA May 18, 2008 Picked this up in for Vermont of all places in the bomber. Poured into a pint glass dark as night with a really nice head. The lacing from the head was amazing as it stuck to the sides. It smelled of smokey chocolate malts but the aroma really didn’t blew down any doors. The taste however did. It was balanced and complete. Nearly all porters in my book lack somewhere: When the flavor is on the body is too light, when the body is nice and creamy the flavor is watery. To this point I can say this is probably the best porter I have had and it reinstalled my faith in porters. BMan1113VR (2757), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA May 12, 2008 A bit overated in my opinion. I must say, I agree with Greg Koch’s quote, the smoke level is perfect. Pours with a leage, foamy, ligh brown head covering an ultra dark brown body. Aroma is smoke and tons of molasses. Taste is smokeyness, and coffee. Tons of intense flavor for a sub-6% ABV. Sort of a nutty aftertaste. Great lacing from the head. Light carbonation and a decent mouthfeel. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA May 11, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a small dense beige head. Aroma is lightly sweet and smoked, some licorice, chocolate and coffee. Flavor is light roasted malt, some chocolate malt, coffee and a decent bitterness. Medium bodied, creamy texture. Medium smoky bitter finish.
tylerss20 (101), New Hampshire, USA May 10, 2008 Wow. I finally tried this stuff. Picked up a bomber from Jasper’s in Nashua. Pours like oil, black and completely opaque. Cream colored one finger head that recedes quickly. Vanilla, caramel, coffee, and maybe licorice (?) in the aroma. Full bodied mouthfeel, roasty malt character, chocolate, medium sweetness, smokiness, and just a bit of hop on the backend. This was a fantastic brew, and replaces Anchor as my favorite porter. HighlanderOne (538), Somewherein, New Jersey, USA May 10, 2008 Poured from bottle 5/2008. Chocolate, vanilla, caramel, a hop or two in the aroma. Solid black, tan lacing head. Flavors explode in your mouth - cocoa, coffee, chicory, dash of vanilla. Nice bitterness to it up front, but mellow in the aftertaste. Flavors blend beautifully at finish. Excellent!
