Aquilo (248), California, USA May 5, 2008 Pitch black with a medium tan head. If you hold it up to the light, you can see red highlights. Smells of chocolate and caramel. I got the first hint of smoke somewhere deep in the nose. Flavor is pleasant. Not strong, not complex, just pleasant. I can taste some toffee, and a little smokiness. Perhaps some chocolate, but I’m not too sure about that. Palate is liquid silk. Absolutely perfect! I like this one a lot. sunevdj (1764), Copenhagen OE, Denmark May 4, 2008 Updated: Jul 23, 2008On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear brownish black with a small, dreamy off-white head and a bit of lacings. Moderate sweet- and bitterness. Aromas of toasted malts. Also a hint pof smoke aromas. Medium piny hoppiness. Medium to full bodied with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Lively carbonation. Dry smoky finish.. JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA May 3, 2008 Extremely dark ruby red color, almost black, with medium sized light tan head. Aroma has chewy malts, slightly nuty, fair amount of vanilla, touch of caramel and cherry, and an almost imperceptible touch of smokeyness. Flavor has a bit more smoke, bit of caramel, vanilla, oak, molasses, faint ash and bitter malts. Finish is a bit thin but is well balanced. carruthm (1109), Seattle, Washington, USA May 2, 2008 pours black with a foamy off-white head that starts at two fingers and slowly falls to one and coats the glass. Aroma is of subdued chocolates and malt, though there’s not much at first. Flavor shows some carbonation and alcohol and leaves behind a coffee aftertaste. deepsouth (23), biloxi, Mississippi, USA May 1, 2008 this beer poured a browinish black with a little head that turned into a straw colored ring. i couldn’t detect much in the nose at first because i think the beer was a bit too cool. as it warmed up, i noticed the smoked maltiness. this beer isn’t complex in the nose, but smells delicious. the taste is of roasted malt with some hop bittering. superbly balanced. the mouthfeel is full and great for this style. overall, this is a freaking awesome beer that i could drink on the daily. a big thanks to barefootbrewer for sharing this one with me.
brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Apr 29, 2008 Vintage 2004
Pours dark brown, almost black and opaque.
Mahogany edging with a crimson hue.
A humble half-inch head of beige retreated quickly to a partial coverage skim coat and a few dots of lacework.
Aromatics are surprisingly vineous. Bitter chocolate, red wine, scorched caramel bits, some dark fruit, and a smidge of smoldering embers. A hint of vanilla rounds out the bunch.
Thin mouthfeel. Slightly creamy with low carbonation.
Dark chocolate, deep roasted malts, espresso grounds and mild smoke on the pallet.
All are quite balanced and the overall character is subdued and sessionesque.
Finishes with some lingering caramel drizzeled dark malts.
While the four years in the cellar has brought a complexity to the nose, the body and pallet has faded.
NobleSquirrel (1094), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 28, 2008 Somehow I managed to overlook this one, rating from memory. The smoke, to me, is closer to what you get from roasted malts than from actually smoking the beer. But this seems to be pretty common from peat smoking. At any rate, chocolatey and chalky, finishes dry. Pretty nice. EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Apr 27, 2008 Opaque black pour with a thick light-tan head. Beautiful lacing on the glass. Malty aroma with hints of wood and smokiness. Bitter malt and roast flavor. Hints of smoke. Lots of coffee on the tongue. Typical porter. Not bad, but nothing special.
