Cruzan59 (197), Lititz, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 5, 2008 22oz bottle from Total Wine, River Edge, NJ...pours black with beige head...malty aroma with subtle coffee and chocolate...smokey dry flavor, coal, roasted dark coffee bean, dark chocolate powder...abundance of flavor...creamy but dry mouthfeel. malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Apr 4, 2008 22 ounce bottle, first pour, in tumbler (no pint glasses at my mother’s in AZ). Black with lasting tan head and lotsa lace. Smoky chocolate and chocolate chip cookie dough aroma. Fruity chocolate fig flavor, with smoke and roasted chocolate, and mild-to-medium finishing bitterness and some lingering smoky dark chocolate. Medium-full body and medium-low carbo. Friggin excellent all-around. mcmd (132), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 4, 2008 22 oz bomber in a snifter. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, hint of coffee and smoke. Dark brown with nice tan head. Heavy smoke in the flavor with chocolate, coffee, and hop bitterness in the finish. Not a big fan of porters, hard to get through the smoke of this one. I’ll stick with Edmund Fitzgerald over this one. pik5el (51), Pasadena, Maryland, USA Mar 31, 2008 I love the aroma, a deep smokiness with all kinds of robust chocolate and dates. Nice light brown head that is quite plentiful. Flavor is... porter. I’m just not crazy about porters for some reason. I love the smoky character to it. This is probably one of my favorite porters. I would drink a sample of this and love it, but a whole bottle is too much for me. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 31, 2008 Bomber poured into a pint glass. Mahogany color with a medium tan head. Some lacing and decent retention.
Aroma is not particularly smokey, instead reverting to the notes of a standard porter: roasted malt and chocolate.
Flavor is very roasty with coffee flavors sweetened by chocolate. The smoke takes a larger role here than in the smell, complementing the charred roastiness.
Pretty thick in mouthfeel with low carbonation. Smooth but a little flat to me. Overall one of the better smoked porters. frankenstein (64), Livermore, California, USA Mar 30, 2008 Has a slighty smokey coffee aroma. Nice dark appearance. Good smokey chocolate taste, a little bittersweet. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Mar 30, 2008 Poured a little too vigorously, so it had a huge foamy, frothy head. Beautiful head. Nose is roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is smooth and roasted malt with some coffee, just like the nose. Slight bitter finish. Good brew. Goodgrief (1144), Middletown, Delaware, USA Mar 29, 2008 Oct. 2007 - Dark pour, one finger head, little lacing. Little aroma. The flavor was a mix of fruit and roast with faint chocolate. The smokiness also comes out, but not overpowering. Thick smooth mouthfeel coats the tongue. Good beer, but not fantastic.
