bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Jan 19, 2008 Bottle. Deep dark brown color, almost black. Beechwood, cream and a bit of soap in the aroma. Medium bodied. Creamy, soapy flavor with beechwood, cheese and lychee. Long smoky aftertaste. smashteroid (227), USA Jan 15, 2008 served cold from tap. poured black, not oily, jet black like a stout, but definitely opaque. nice tan head. aroma is very sweet of malts and maybe some hints of coffee. definite smoky flavor, but not overbearing at all. it’s actually rather smooth, and easy to drink. Slipstream (734), USA Jan 15, 2008 Updated: Jan 17, 2008A dark, opaque beer with a healthy tan head that leaves drinking lines. The aroma is rich and sweet - malt, hops, yeast. The first gulp introduces the smoky flavor, and for a moment I wonder if I should put it in a glass or a pipe. There is a good malt presence and those peppy Stone hops are noticable as well. This is a liquid malt-hop barbeque - very nice! Just as the description says, they do not overdo the peat-smoked malt. It is not as dramatic as some other Stone releases, but it is still another excellent beer from them. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jan 14, 2008 Bomber. Black with a 1 finger tan head. Smells mildly meaty, but not as overpowering as some smoked beers. Same goes with the flavor...the smoke is definitely there, but doesn’t overpower the palate. There’s still the body nutty flavors of the underlying porter here. Good stuff. wcampbell (572), Central, South Carolina, USA Jan 13, 2008 Not that great. Surprisingly light bodied and weak. Some sweetness and smoke to it. Roasted malt flavor as well. Watery, sweet finish. cgort (52), mission viejo, California, USA Jan 13, 2008 Updated: Mar 25, 2008Tasty. Black in color with a dark tan head.Smells of coffee. Silky palate. Taste bitter sweet, coffee and maulty. A very tasty Porter.
*Had this beer again but this time w/ a GRILLED PB&J and it was so so good! Highly recommended. Just get some sour dough bread and make a PB&J. then butter the outside and grill it like a grilled cheese. You won’t be disappointed with this great combo. tagz (334), USA Jan 13, 2008 Updated: Jan 30, 2009draft. pours black with one finger brown head. nice espresso aroma. taste brings in roasted malts and a mild smokey flavor. palate is fantastic - light body without being water and an extremely mild carbonation that just tingles the tongue and lets the flavors do all the work. clean, dry, and bitter finish (without the green hoppy flavors that i’ve found with great lakes, sierra nevada, etc). a really great porter. recommended! joekfsu (138), Boardman, Ohio, USA Jan 13, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a nearly black ruby color with 1 cm off-white/tan head that is mostly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and caramel, very slight aroma of smoke. Initial flavor is a little sweet and smoky at the same time. Aftertaste is lasting and dominated by smoke and bitter from coffee or chocolate. Medium bodied, light carbonation, light lacing, and only a hint of alcohol detected. Very drinkable, as both a good porter and smoky beer.
