Commercial Description:
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Let me start by saying I am not a big fan of Porters, but I am a fan of Stone Brewing Co. So I picked up the a bomber of Smoked Porter just to try it out. And as usual Stone did not disappoint. The beer poured a murky dark brown, with a smokey coffee aroma with just a hint of sweet malt. Taste started with a sweet malt and a hint of heavy fruit, and was quickly taken over by the smoke and roasted malts. The finish was very clean and dry with the strong taste of roasted malts and hop bitterness. Mouthfeel was good, and for a porter very drinkable. For me one of the few porters I have truly enjoyed

22 oz bomber from Casanova. Medium thick pour, black in color. Smokey chocolate aroma. Thick mouthfeel, hints of chocolate with a smokey coffee flavor and a smooth finish. Very flavorful but surprisingly smooth.

On tap at the brewery after the tour. I have had this before but this one had more flavor. Dark black with a cocoa head. Smells smoky. This just tastes way too smoky for me, I wonder how they get the smoke flavor?? My cousin’s exact words were :"You can’t hide behind your IPA forever!". Needless to say the Stone employees did not take a liking to us. I bet this would be better with the chipotle peppers or vanilla beans to temper that smokiness. Dont know if it was the bottle or what, but I wasn’t too impressed. It has a nice smooth flavor and is very drinkable, but is far from anything special or complex. I enjoyed it a lot more as it warmed and could more easily taste the alcohol and subtle smokiness.

Aged 18 months. Pours with a surisingly explosive head Ɠ/4 of the glass even when poured carefully? Jeez.). The beer part is a very dark brown/black that is slightly opaque on the edges. Aroma is sweet roasty malts, dark fruits, and some oxidation. Taste is most akin to a very fruity aged porter. The smoke has almost completely dropped out after a year and a half of aging. The faintest hint is still present. If this ages along the same curve as Alaskan Smoked Porter, then the smoke should come back around in about a year. It would be better balanced then. As it stands, this is way better fresh than Alaskan Smoked Porter, but the Alaskan has better ageability.

Strong coffee and roasty aromas. Pours dark black with a thin, but creamy head. Strong bitter coffee flavors. Very porterish mouthfeel that belies how thick it looks sitting in the glass.

This could very well be my favorite porter thus far. It has a very subtle smokiness that adds a little to the complexity. It is has a a mild chocolatey flavour that acts as its backbone but there are other elements (coffee, peatiness) that add to its complexity. It has a great mouthfeel, (goes down very smooth) I really enjoyed this one.
