A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Transfer from BA review on 5-23-12- Poured from 22 oz bomber into pint glass Appearance – Pours a deep brown nearly black color with a thick one finger tan head. The head had very nice retention leaving a medium amount of lacing. Smell – Roasted malt is heaviest in the nose. These are cocoa and dark bread in nature with lighter hints of some smokiness, pine and a nice caramel/brown sugar sweetness. Taste – A smooth roasted malt and cocoa flavor mixed with a light sweet caramel start the taste out. The caramel fades as some hoppy flavors come to the tongue. These are largely earthy in nature with lighter flavors of pine. At the end, the smoke that is suggested in the name, comes to fruition along with a resurgence (light resurgence) of some sweeter flavors. Overall a very nice taste is left on the tongue in the end. Mouthfeel – Creamier then the average brew with a slightly lighter level of carbonation. Very nice for the roasty-smoky flavors of the brew. Overall – It’s a rather easy to drink, roasty and a good go to for a slightly dryer porter. Not too shabby.

Bottle. Pours clear very dark brown with a big mostly lasting creamy beige head that leaves great lacing. Aroma of hay and grass. Light to medium bitter and lightly sweet in a light body. Light smoky flavor mixed with dark malt and bitter hops. A bit too much carbonation and a long bitter finish.

Delicious, in a strong smokey beer kind of way. On tap at the Sheffield Tap.

Pours a medium brown with a medium offwhite head that leaves good lacing (in a plastic cup at the Mondial, anyway). Nose is of smoke, smoke and more smoke. For sure there is some roasted malt in there but I cannot find it. Taste is moderately bitter, offers smoke and some burnt malt flavors. Never ashy or stout-y, this is a real porter. Body is medium, carbonation moderately high and finish of smoky wood. Overall a really good smoked beer!

Pours a dark ruby with nice amount of off white head. Smells smokey with hints of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. The taste was really good. Vanilla upfront with peat smoke not dominating the whole beer. At the end chocolate, coffee, and some hops come through to balance everything out! Pretty light palate. One of my favorite porters I tried so far! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2014 Appearance: Poured a very dark brown, almost black color. Creamy tan head about two and a half fingers worth. This head left very nice lacing. Aroma: Smoky with a little vanilla. Taste: Smoked malt, vanilla, a hint of chocolate. Coffee flavor at the end. I think it has a very well balanced range of flavors. Mouth feel: Seemed a bit thinner for what it looked like while pouring, but definitely not a bad mouth feel. Serving type: on-tap

Another example of honesty in labelling by Stone. Mind you, it’d be more accurate to call it "An excellent smoky porter" - because that is exactly what it is.

Everything about this porter is spot in for the style. The smoky flavor doesn't hit you when you first drink it but the aftertaste leaves a burning sensation in your throat. You know you just inhaled smoke.

Bottle, picked up somewhere in NYC. Dark almost black colour, ruddy hints, thick head. Very full flavour, actually uses the strong abv. Roasty malts, chocolate and coffee, restrained hint of smoke. Quite a hoppy finish, a bit less of this might have let the malts shine through more. Very drinkable and pleasant.

22 oz bottle poured a murky dark brown. Lots of head. Aroma of roasted coffee. The taste is bold roasted malt and coffee flavors with mild smoke with a long finish. Great!
