Aroma of smoke and some darker chocolate. Flavor is smoke up front with some bitterness at the end. Want to try this one with some smoked ribs. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA

The alcohol taste has so mellowed and this beer is ripe! Mellow smokiness and chocolate make it fantastic. hotstuff (3183), Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 29, 2005 Bottle. Medium tan head that was mostly lasting, fine-small sized bubbles, sparse lacing, transparent, no visible carbonation, and a reddish brown hue. Aroma was malty, chocolate, roasty, amd sweet. Malty, coffee, roasty, smokey, and chocolate flavor. Very tasty. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium body. Worthy of a try. TheBeerGod (3177), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 23, 2003 Pours a rich brown with a brown, creamy head. The first scent is of hops and a smokiness. Then slowly the coffee-ish notes seep in. The taste has some hop bitterness to go along with the cocoa and coffee combo but the smoke taste is not a strong as the Aecht Scherlenka brand. That was a little overwhelming whereas this was more tolerable. Good beer. RichardGretton (3166), Leicestershire, England
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 1, 2009 Bottle. Black beer with a strongish head. The aroma is lightly roasted and smoked, and the flavour is deeply roasted, strongly bitter and rich and malty. Overall a very nice porter. PorterPounder (3148), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2003 Updated: Apr 30, 2009Rerate A bit less flavorful this time around - not as much roasted chocolate notes as a porter of this caliber should have Original 3.9 An excellent smoked beer for those who are not fond of smoked beers (me!). The appearance is the color of raw liver with a mocha head and good lacing. Has a slight smoky aroma but not overpowering. Has a very mellow smoky flavor not cloying at all and did not taste like a bottle of liquid smoke - I expected to be blown out of the water with smoky flavor. Has a very pleasant mouthfeel. The hops find their way in nicely in the aftertaste. Well done. hughie (3090), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 31, 2009 Dark reddish brown with a beige head. Aroma is spicy cachou sweetness with a seaweed background. Taste is leathery, mocha soaked cardboard, with full cream or perhaps evaporated milk just on the turn. Gentle woodsmoke finish with a slight dryness. Complex and interesting, if not entirely to my taste. GeneralGao (3081), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 31, 2007 22 oz bottle. Poured a clear black color with red highlights. Head was thick and tan with good retention and lacing. Smelled of chocolate and light molasses. Slightly sweet up front with a thick, creamy mouth feel. The delicate sweetness gives way to dry, roasty malt with a touch of chocolate. There is only a subdued smoky note with a light roasty bitter finish.
