3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown color; big creamy head. Nice aroma of caramel, wood, light smokey and pepper. The body is weaker than expected, with a strong caramel flavor corrected by light roasted malt and light vanilla, a bit milky; very light smokey touch. The perfect marriage is not between roasted malt and smoked malt…

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 28, 2009 Bottle, 22oz. Pours a very dark brown, with a rather small beige to tan head. Chocolate, a little smoked note, cocoa and coffee in the aroma. The flavor has chocolate, roasted malt, some smoke, and a nice, hoppy bitterness. Full body. Long, roasted finish with chocolate, nice fruityness and a pleasant bitterness. A nice smoked porter, could wish for more smoked though. 6-4-7-4-14-3.5. 071228
Bottle, 22oz, at Cardinal. A clear, dark brown beer with a beige head. Roasted nose with chocolate and some smoke. Would have liked more smoke though. There’s only notes of smoke in the flavor too, chocolate and coffee, roasted malts that is, dominating, and a fine bitterness showing up in the back. The bitterness finishes off the beer in a nice way too. Full-bodied. A fine beer that probably would benefit from more smoke, but that’s just me maybe. 090728

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at Chris_o Shindig. Very deep ruby. Lasting beige head. Rather a good choccy porter, peppery hop finish, not huge smoke. Some ashtray. Sweetish toffee and choc. Pretty good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Growler. The quintessential smoked porter. Pours a dark, black hue with a full, beige head. Deep, rich aroma with strong roasted malt character. The taste follows in a similar vein: burnt malts and strong flavors of coffee and dark chocolate. Some mild hop bitterness. Silky mouthfeel and medium- to big-bodied. Aftertaste lingers for a while with that burnt malt flavor. Really good stuff.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 21, 2014 Very dark brown, almost black with a finger and a half of off-white head. Smells smokey, of course, with aromas of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of sweetness. The first sip is sweet, primarily caramel. As it warms up a bit, the slight smokiness comes out, as do the traditional porter flavors such as coffee and chocolate. A nice roasted malt taste is prevalent. I’m generally not that big of a fan of smoked beers, but this one is light enough on the smoke, and it seems to add a bit of sweetness.
