COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

It clearly said that it would not be a bitter porter on the back of the bottle, but it was still surprising to see how a liquid with the opacity of a Guiness could go down SO smooth! The smoked part of this porter is perhaps a little bit light for the name, but it is in there, and the robust burned malty flavor is really desirable. As with all the Stone’s brews that I have tried, the head just does not dissipate, and the lace on the glass has to be scrubbed off! Very nice beer.

I lived in San Diego 15 years ago- BEFORE the county became renown as a hot spot in the craft brew community. Man, was I suprised by this offering from Stone Brewing. I bought a 22oz from BevMo and was blown away by the quality of this porter. The smoke comes through loud and clear, but doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate and coffee notes. I will make it a priority to visit this brewery on my next trip to SD.

There is a lot to appreciate in this nicely priced Porter. Great earthy aromatics on the nose and the first sip was instantly smokey with big mouth-feel but, not sticky. Finish is still malt-forward with a nod to some mild hop dryness. Great iteration of the style!

Smells delicious, chocolate, rich malt and liquorice. Pours dark brown with a tan head, looks of low carbonation, Big bitter flavour up front, followed by dark berries, burnt malt, slightly smoky, a little bit of grapefruit. Heavy body and early bitterness, medium carbonation, dry finish. A unique beer which is worth trying and good enough for continual purchase. The smoke isn't to over powering and best for those who like hops. Not sweet and more refreshing than you would expect a porter to be.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2006 22 oz bottle. Very light aroma, almost non-existent. Dark, dark brown. Virtually no head. Silky feel in mouth with really nice dark malt flavor. Only a slight hint of smoke. A very easy to drink brew. Not the best, but really good.

22oz bottle. Drank at room temp in a regular pint glass. Poured a dark tan head. Slight Aroma of coffee/chocoalate/ Very very smooth! Pretty malty with molasses, coffee and chocoalate tastes Not as viscous as i thought it would be. Overall pretty enjoyable. Warmed me up on a cool night.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2008 Tasty. Black in color with a dark tan head.Smells of coffee. Silky palate. Taste bitter sweet, coffee and maulty. A very tasty Porter. *Had this beer again but this time w/ a GRILLED PB&J and it was so so good! Highly recommended. Just get some sour dough bread and make a PB&J. then butter the outside and grill it like a grilled cheese. You won’t be disappointed with this great combo.

Dark brown pour, with a huge brown head that never seems to go away! Some lacing on glass. Smell is chocolate, coffee and strong burnt malt. Tatse is same with a burnt sweetness and a bit of alcohol nothing overwhelming. Good character on the tongue. Well balanced beer. Just what a expect from SBC.

I am one of the minority I guess! I am not getting smoked, ( very very faint)! I am tasting the usual American interpretation of the Porter style which is much too sweet!! Color is great , head is fine but it is about as subtle as a crutch!!

Not a big fan of smoked porters but this one was pretty good. Huge malt with gently smoky aftertaste. Hardly any hops but plenty dark and malty.
