COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Draft at the Stone Brewery on 11Jul2007. Pours brown-black with small off-white head. Burnt, toasted malt, bit off coffee and cocoa. Slight smokiness, but very, very faint. Finishes with a slight bitterness across the palate for a mild bite at the end. Good porter.

Attractive head with only a bit of tenacity. Very deep brown color. Aroma is a complex range of roasted malts and hops with a smoked presence and a high note of alcohol at the end. Medium body and surprisingly balanced. Flavor is complex with a slight sweetness of caramel as well as the bitterness of a moderate chocolate. Hop flavors blossom closer to the finish and provide a woody dryness that would make it an excellent pair for stronger entres.

Let me start by saying I am not a big fan of Porters, but I am a fan of Stone Brewing Co. So I picked up the a bomber of Smoked Porter just to try it out. And as usual Stone did not disappoint. The beer poured a murky dark brown, with a smokey coffee aroma with just a hint of sweet malt. Taste started with a sweet malt and a hint of heavy fruit, and was quickly taken over by the smoke and roasted malts. The finish was very clean and dry with the strong taste of roasted malts and hop bitterness. Mouthfeel was good, and for a porter very drinkable. For me one of the few porters I have truly enjoyed

22 oz. bottle. Moderately strong and complex aroma thatís primarily dark chocolate and licorice with a dark fruit element, maybe dark cherries or blackberries. Color is a deep ruby, almost black, with a inch thick, creamy, espresso-colored head that quickly subsides to a fine layer which laces thinly down the glass. I donít know what Koch is talking about because the peat malt is unquestionably the defining character of this beer. Still, itís not overwhelming so you can still enjoy the bittersweet chocolate malt behind it. The texture could be a bit thicker but the beer still manages to be rather creamy and soft. All in all this is a damn fine beer.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle purchased at Stone Brewing Co. Very dark brown/black with a rich tan head. Aroma is malty, chocolate, roasted coffee, and very light smoke. Very enjoyable to drink. Slightly sweet, and very light bitter finish. Very nice lacing, more sticky than expected.

I lived in San Diego 15 years ago- BEFORE the county became renown as a hot spot in the craft brew community. Man, was I suprised by this offering from Stone Brewing. I bought a 22oz from BevMo and was blown away by the quality of this porter. The smoke comes through loud and clear, but doesnít overwhelm the chocolate and coffee notes. I will make it a priority to visit this brewery on my next trip to SD.

Bomber. Pours a deep, almost black mahogany with a fluffy and quickly dissipating tan head. The smoky aroma releases as it pours and pervades through the coffee and chocolate maltiness. Hints of burnt toffee and finishes smoothly and just a bit bitter. Well balanced and light enough to be easily drinkable. Widely available and relatively inexpensive, this is one of my go-to beers on a chilly night.

It clearly said that it would not be a bitter porter on the back of the bottle, but it was still surprising to see how a liquid with the opacity of a Guiness could go down SO smooth! The smoked part of this porter is perhaps a little bit light for the name, but it is in there, and the robust burned malty flavor is really desirable. As with all the Stoneís brews that I have tried, the head just does not dissipate, and the lace on the glass has to be scrubbed off! Very nice beer.

Pours black. With a tan head, that disappears quickly. Well balanced, smooth driniking, smokey favor. Alcohol is hidden.
