3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the Stone Brewery on 11Jul2007. Pours brown-black with small off-white head. Burnt, toasted malt, bit off coffee and cocoa. Slight smokiness, but very, very faint. Finishes with a slight bitterness across the palate for a mild bite at the end. Good porter.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Attractive head with only a bit of tenacity. Very deep brown color. Aroma is a complex range of roasted malts and hops with a smoked presence and a high note of alcohol at the end. Medium body and surprisingly balanced. Flavor is complex with a slight sweetness of caramel as well as the bitterness of a moderate chocolate. Hop flavors blossom closer to the finish and provide a woody dryness that would make it an excellent pair for stronger entres.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 22 oz bottle purchased at Stone Brewing Co. Very dark brown/black with a rich tan head. Aroma is malty, chocolate, roasted coffee, and very light smoke. Very enjoyable to drink. Slightly sweet, and very light bitter finish. Very nice lacing, more sticky than expected.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
I lived in San Diego 15 years ago- BEFORE the county became renown as a hot spot in the craft brew community. Man, was I suprised by this offering from Stone Brewing. I bought a 22oz from BevMo and was blown away by the quality of this porter. The smoke comes through loud and clear, but doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate and coffee notes. I will make it a priority to visit this brewery on my next trip to SD.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber. Pours a deep, almost black mahogany with a fluffy and quickly dissipating tan head. The smoky aroma releases as it pours and pervades through the coffee and chocolate maltiness. Hints of burnt toffee and finishes smoothly and just a bit bitter. Well balanced and light enough to be easily drinkable. Widely available and relatively inexpensive, this is one of my go-to beers on a chilly night.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
It clearly said that it would not be a bitter porter on the back of the bottle, but it was still surprising to see how a liquid with the opacity of a Guiness could go down SO smooth! The smoked part of this porter is perhaps a little bit light for the name, but it is in there, and the robust burned malty flavor is really desirable. As with all the Stone’s brews that I have tried, the head just does not dissipate, and the lace on the glass has to be scrubbed off! Very nice beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black. With a tan head, that disappears quickly. Well balanced, smooth driniking, smokey favor. Alcohol is hidden.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: NOV 17, 2006 22 oz bottle. Very light aroma, almost non-existent. Dark, dark brown. Virtually no head. Silky feel in mouth with really nice dark malt flavor. Only a slight hint of smoke. A very easy to drink brew. Not the best, but really good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Smells delicious, chocolate, rich malt and liquorice. Pours dark brown with a tan head, looks of low carbonation,
Big bitter flavour up front, followed by dark berries, burnt malt, slightly smoky, a little bit of grapefruit.
Heavy body and early bitterness, medium carbonation, dry finish.
A unique beer which is worth trying and good enough for continual purchase. The smoke isn't to over powering and best for those who like hops. Not sweet and more refreshing than you would expect a porter to be.
