A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

22oz bomber. Mistakenly grabbed this instead of the Imperial Stout at the store, as the shelf-stockers, in their infinite wisdom, put two beers from the same co. with remarkable similar labels as far as color scheme and overall design goes...well the idjits put them side by side and I departed with this instead of the RIS goodness. So be it. Turns out, for something I would never ever try, if not only on a dare, this one isnít too bad at all. As a homebrewer myself, I am fascinated by the process involved in making this one. The smoke is prevalent, yet subtle. There is even some dried fruit on the downtake, and a sweetness at the end. Well more than any balance I expected to find in a beer like this. All the same, finishing a mere 22oz bomber is a chore, unless you pour liquid smoke on your morning toast or something. Ack! on the smoke, Aces on the execution of this style.

Aroma: wood pile, toast, charcoal; Appearance: deep brown with a hint of purple, pours a think, dark tan head that lingers; Taste: just awesome, I can see why this one is rated 100 amongst its class, burnt malt, but not bitter in the slightest, very foody, meaning that it reminds me a lot of grilled things, although I canít be more specific than that, totally wonderful, and this is coming from someone who doesnít usually do porters; Palate: very, very smooth while remaining crisp enough in carbonation, a totally feel-good beer, Iíd even recommend it for a late night snack; toastiness lingers; Overall: very, very good, maybe its just because I didnít go into this beer expecting much, but, whatever the case, Iím tempted to say its one of my top 10 favorite beers

Smells delicious, chocolate, rich malt and liquorice. Pours dark brown with a tan head, looks of low carbonation, Big bitter flavour up front, followed by dark berries, burnt malt, slightly smoky, a little bit of grapefruit. Heavy body and early bitterness, medium carbonation, dry finish. A unique beer which is worth trying and good enough for continual purchase. The smoke isn't to over powering and best for those who like hops. Not sweet and more refreshing than you would expect a porter to be.

22 US fl.oz. bomber poured into a tulip pint glass... A nice dark brown (or very deep mahogany) colour to it. The head is very foamy at first, then it settles down to about a finger in thickness. Very nice lacing and good head retention. Looks beautfiyl. The smell is not that intense (probably because the beer isnít that fresh). Roasted malts, bitter chocolate, a tint of coffee. Some earthy hops and a fair amount of smoke. The taste had a wonderful roasted and smoked profile. Pretty sweet for a porter, but the sweetness is not pushing the limits. Some earthy hops. The smoke adds an extra layer of meatiness to the beer. The after-taste is full of roasted malt and chocolate notes; the bitterness is not too strong. Very balanced and flavourful. I like how the bitterness, which is pretty intense, is suppressed by the sweetness and the smokiness. Medium-to-full-bodied. Quite thick, but very smooth, even creamy. Not much carbonation. A slight slight warming sensation from the alcohol. Moderately dry and bitter. This is a very drinkable porter. Goes down smoothly. Each sip is enjoyable. Overall, this is a fantastic porter, and another very solid beer from Stone.

Poured from the bottle, this is a very dark, intense brown with not a lot of foam. In this sample, the nose is not distinctive other than a slight muskiness Ė I wonder is this oneís been on the store shelf too long. Although the finish does deliver a somewhat smoky taste, itís characterized by a thin finish and bitter aftertaste, rather uncomplicated. I agree with lj6880 that this presents like a black lager.

This stuff smells rich. Toffee and coffee, nice carbonation on the intake, a little dry and sweet, it sticks with you. A real great beer.

Bottled. This porter pours black with a large fizzy light-brown head. The aroma is malty with only a slight hint of roast and chocolate. Itís heavy and the taste is dominated by a dry roasty coffee flavor.

Good Solid Porter. Dark brown with good head. Roasted arouma with coffee hints. Same goes for flavor. Great mouth feel( on the lighter side) All in all a fine example of style, well balanced. Cheers
